Question: Has anyone been pregnant with the gene factor V? I have a somewhat rare gene called factor V. I am on injections of lovenox and will be switching to heprin at 36 weeks. I know this can have an effect on getting an epidural with the timing, but I am nervous to get one at all. Also the boots I'm supposed to wear when I go into labor? And after if I go on the pill form I don't believe I can breastfeed? Anyone with experience would be very helpful I'm only 19 and have already had a DVT! Anything to prevent that after delivery! Thanks!
Answer: I have Factor V as well. It was diagnosed when I was 26 weeks pregnant and had a DVT in my left thigh. I was in the hospital for about a week and then but on twice daily Lovenox. In my 36 week I was switched to Heparin. I was induced at 38 weeks. My daughter is now 13 months old and very healthy. I will try to answer all your questions. If you have any other then feel free to contact me.
1. I had the epidural. (I don't think I took my Heparin that morning so that I could get the epidural) It was fine. I would do it again, if I ever get pregnant. The epidural is easy, especially if you have been used to Lovenox injections. Anyway I need up needing a c-section because my daughter has a big head and I have pretty small hips.
2. I wore the boots after the delivery. If they were O.K but pretty annoying. The inflate and deflate over and over again to help your circulation. It was pretty annoying to hear all the time, especially at night. And it was somewhat difficult to get in and out of because you can't wear them when you get up. However, if you have a regular birth getting in and out of them will probably be pretty easy. It wasn't after a c-section.
3. I was switched to only coumadin about a week after the birth. I breast feed and it wasn't a problem.
4. 9 months after the birth, I was taken off the coumadin. They scanned my thigh and it was totally clear of the clot. Now I take one baby aspirin a day. I make sure that I don't sit for more than 3 hours without walking around. My doctors say that if I get another clot then it is coumadin for life. But for now everything is fine.
Take care! I hope everything works out well for you and your baby!
Question: Any body discovered they had Factor V whilst pregnant? I am currently approx 7 weeks pregnant and I have a early scan booked for monday and to see a consultant. My daughter who is 3 was my first pregnancy which I sailed through. After her I have had 4 miscarriages which have all ended before 12 weeks.
Im doing to ask him to test me for for factor v leiden and I was wondering if anybody else has had problems like me and found out that they have factor v?
Answer: hiya, i have factor v leiden, it is a blood clotting disorder which can have an effect on miscarriage, I also suffered several (i lost 7 babies before i got my son), at the time the 'experts' were saying there is no connection between the two but now i believe they think there is, also there is another and just as common blood disorder called 'hughes syndrome' or 'sticky blood' which for those who have it can be a cause of miscarriage, again another blood test you can have, myself, it was discovered that along with the factor v, i had tho only when pregnant the hughes and lupus, combined with an incomptent cervix it's a miracle my son is here and now 8!. You should be investigated now for the miscarriages, you can have the blood tests whilst pregant (its how i found out about the lupus and the hughes). I had to go thru my pregnancy self administering blood thinning injections of clexaine (a heprin based drug) which wasn't as bad as it seems, and it was a big help. Arm yourself with as much information as you can, print it all off, have a look on the miscarriage association website, and take it with you to the consultant... generally factor v doesn't always cause miscarriage tho it can, but if you have other factors lurking behind, like myself, when i get pregnant, the lupus appears along iwth the hughes, it's not a good combination. Look up Hughes syndrome .. hang on let me find the sites for you.

Good luck with your pregnancy, and most importantly gather info and take it with you and DON'T be fobbed off, i was, and the cost was too high, if it wasn't for the fact that I was pregnant for the last time and so poorly i had to move back to my parents and changed hospital and got a fantastic doctor who would listen, my son wouldn't have made it.

Question: I have leg pain and possible Leiden V Factor, should I go to the hospital? I've been having horrible pains in the outside of my left leg. It's a small area where the pain is localized and my leg starts to go numb. My uncle died from complications associated with Leiden V Factor (which is a blood clotting disorder) but I've never been tested for it. Should I go to the hospital to see if its a clot or am I being dramatic?
Answer: symptoms of a blood clot
# Swelling
# Gradual onset of pain
# Redness
# Warm to touch
# Worsening leg pain when bending the foot
# Leg cramps, especially at night
# Bluish or whitish discoloration of skin
I would go if I were you, even if you are wrong you are safer if you go. I hope that you are wrong and its nothing, good luck.
Question: I have Factor V Leidens disease. I have a 14 inch blood clot in my left leg. Am I eligible for disability? I can stand for a hour, but then I have to sit and elevate my leg for 20 minutes and If I sit in a chair for an hour then i have to walk for 20 minutes. I am also on Coumadin which is an anti coagulate.Which limits me also because of the risk of bleeding. Any suggestions? Thank You in advance.
Answer: Um no. After a few months you clot should be gone. If you were in the hospital and were on heparin, the risk of your clot moving is gone. Warfarin will help your blood move better and will make it thinner, but it doesn't make you disabled. A week after I was out of the hospital I was back in school and at work even with the Lovenox injections every 12 hours. My blood clot went from my groin all the way down my right leg half way down my calf.
I have have Leiden V and am on warfarin. Just go to work if the pain is gone. Geez. Unless you work in construction and could get hit in the head with something, your risk because of warfarin is minimal. My swelling went down after a couple of months, but it was off an on. Your clot is temporary and if this is your first one, so should your coumadin therapy.
Be aware that a lot of people are on blood thinners. The doctor should have told you to wear a medic alert bracelet and get your blood checked regularly.
Question: Any one had a baby with factor V Liden and PEs? I have had 8 PEs and would like to know if anyone has had a healthy and sucessful pregsuccessfulhat are the effects of Lovenox on the baby?
Answer: Sorry Megan this is the cooking section. You will likely get some good answers in the Health section.
Question: My mother has Factor V Leiden Blood Deficiency and I want to go on the contreceptive pill...? My mother has factor v leiden blood deficiency and i read that if you are related to someone with this, even if you have shown no signs, you have to take certain steps to avoid it. The problem is one of these steps was not go on the contreceptive pill but i want to to avoid getting pregnant and so i was wondering if there was another form of contreception (other than condoms) that will protect me from getting pregnant as well as not give me this deficiency.
Answer: I have the injection which you get every 11-12 weeks or the implant every 3 years.
Question: What year did DNA testing for Factor V Lieden become available?
Answer: 1993

Question: Anybody heard of Factor V Leiden? I have been diagnosed with factor v and am told to be on blood thinners for the rest of my life (only 25) and just curious to see if anybody has heard of it and if they have to be on blood thinners or is there anything natural I can do for this.
Answer: Patients who have experienced one thrombotic episode should be treated with anticoagulant therapy for a period of 3 months to 1 year to prevent further thrombotic episodes. The clinician should consider the risks of hemorrhage against the risk of further thrombotic disease in each particular patient depending on individual physical demands and risks of thrombosis.
Coumarin (Coumadin, Warfarin) is found in many plants in nature, in case you have been prescribed that drug. Medical-grade coumarin is standardized so you can achieve safe dosing.
Patients who experience recurrent thrombotic disease and/or have a strong positive family history of thrombotic disease may be placed on long-term anticoagulant therapy, again weighing the risks of thrombotic disease against hemorrhagic disease.
Question: Are Lupus Anti coagulant and Factor V grouped together?
Answer: They can be. In these disorders you have a propensity to clot. Also in these groups you have homocystenuria, protein c and s deficiency.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Doc
