Answer: Heavens, as I recall for Neurology we largely used 'handouts' from our attendings, and of course the Mass General Handbook of Neuro. was splendid, at the med school level. Lots of "little" pocket "survival" guides were available to us but I regret I forget their names. As for Ortho, I just can't recall the name of the 'big book' but for Orthopaedic Radiology, Stoller is undeniably the book to use. The Diagnostic Imaging series is awfully expensive but is brilliantly written for quick reference for virtually any MSK condition you might come across. For Uro, Campbell's book was the bible, without question. Good luck, my dear, I'm sure that your attendings/clerkship directors will provide you with a fine syllabus which will probably serve you better than the texts/atlases I've provided.

Answer: I had that, CBT (Cognitive behavioral therapy) is the therapy for that particular problem. I'd reasearch all you symtoms before you go though and have a clear idea on what you have because they just take a wild guess and perscribe a medication. Right now i take Zoloft at 1 and 1/2 pills of 50mgs ( made for Anxiety, and doesn't react to anything really), which has basicaly saved my social life. i used to spend 5 mins in class thinking about wether or not i should go up and sharpen my pencil, because i feared that anxiety rush so much. i rarely spoke and if i did i would most likely slur a few sentences, everybody thought i was some kind of creep because of it, it sucked. but know i basicaly do whatever i want no problem not even the thought about questioning it either. i look at people that i can tell are nervous and just think why are they nervous their isn't even a crowd. but i know how hard it is so i don't take anything against them.

Question: Is it possible to be a Cardiothoracic and a Neurology Consultant at the same time? My friend and I are disagreeing about if you can be a Cardiothoracic/Cardiac Consultant and a Neurology Consultant at the same time. Baring in mind we both live in the UK. I'm positive it's not possible to specialise in both and the same time, but she thinks you can. So does anyone know if you can or if you can't? Thanks.

Answer: If you train in both, one after the other, I imagine you could. I don't know why on earth anyone would want to do such a thing, though, especially in the UK, where the pay for physicians isn't that great. In the US, you can complete one residency, and then do another, and I know some people who have done that. They don't usually work at two specialties, though - they switch from one to the other. Other physicians are double boarded in two complementary specialties, like pediatrics and anesthesiology, and then become pediatric anesthesiologists. It adds another 3-5 years to the training, though. The other thing you have to understand is that we tend to choose specialties based on our personality. Neurologists and CT surgeons are as different as night and day, so it would be quite rare to find someone who would undertake training in both.

Answer: you got to check with your college, each college has a different requirement for prerequisite courses

Answer: Well... I plan to be a neurosurgeon and have done some research myself. Question: Is there any career that relates to neurology but doesn't require all of medical school? I love neurology and reading up on the brain. While everyone was falling asleep in psych class I was the one fully alert while the teacher talked about neurons and neurotransmitters. But I am already 24 yrs old, I finished school with a degree that I don't enjoy, and I am financially in debt. I was hoping that there was still some career path that I could take that relates to the field and doesn't require all of medical school to complete. Can someone point me toward another career path?

Answer: I would consider looking into becoming an Electroneurodiagnostic Technologist. They work in the clinic with neurologist, performing the electrodiagnostic testing for neurologic conditions such as: ALS, MS, CIDP, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Spinal Radiculopathy, and many other neurologic conditions. They also monitor patients intrraoperatively, during neurosurgical procedures, for brain wave activity, and in the clinic by performing EEGs and other testing. These are also the people who would be working in sleep labs (though that would be one of those overnight jobs watching people sleep, in which I personally would not be able to keep myself interested. I have a neuromuscular condition and have seen several of these professionals, and they are a very significant part of the health care venue. As a note, I also have friends who manage neurology practices that started out performing as an EDT. This would let you use both degrees. Good Luck! Answer: You will need anatomy and physiology, chemistry and biochem, inorganic chem, biology, etc. When you graduate with a bachelor of science degree, you will need to be accepted to med school (4 more years), an internship (1 year), a residency (2 years), and then specialize in neurology (4-8 years). Answer: Presbyterian Hospital in NYC has an excellent department with experienced physicians.

Answer: cuz it includes the nerves which is the transmitter form the brain that carries signal on what is about to be done on certain organs or body parts. in your case you've got a problem, well that could be the effect.

Question: What do I need to do to be a Neurology Nurse Practitioner? I know there are some programs out there, but there aren't very many and they're far from where I live. I would like to know if there is an alternative way to becoming a neurology nurse practitioner. I will receive my BSN in December. Is there a field while getting my MSN that I could focus on? Acute Care? Mental Health? I live in Texas, and I'm willing to move around Texas (although I prefer San Antonio).

Answer: mental health, acute care, icu, er, rehabilitation, all good choices. Avoid working in a general doctor's office unless it is a neurology doctor. Also consider doing an internship where you learn the basics of a field like ICU.
