Question: What happens when you need a gastroenterology surgery? I understand that it involves some digestive system problems but does it become serious when you need a surgery?
What does it mean? How and why would one need a surgery like this? Is it really serious? :(
Answer: There are SO MANY procedures that can be done with the digestive system, that it's hard to make sweeping generalizations about the severity of them.
Some are simple and minor, like removing polyps through an endoscope. Some are very serious indeed, like a Whipple procedure (done for pancreatic cancer).
Many of the procedures done on the GI tract involve cutting into the belly, which puts them in the more serious category.
Why would someone need GI surgery? Here's a few reasons:
Dead bowel
Gastric bypass
Colon cancer
Diverticulitis / perforated diverticulum
Appendicitis
Hiatal hernia
Pancreatic cancer
Small bowel obstruction
Incarcerated hernia
Stab wound to the abdomen
Stomach cancer
Esophageal cancer
Severe gastroesophageal reflux
Taking down a colostomy
Question: What do you learn if you study gastroenterology in med school? I'm not going to college for a few years, but I'm interested in this field of study because it's about guts and I like guts.
Answer: Gastroenterology is the field of internal medicine that studies the different disease of the GI (gastrointestinal) system (which includes the liver, pancreas, gallblader, stomach, esophagus, large and small intestines, & rectum). It is one of the organ systems you will study in medical school.
If you want to become a gastroenterologist, you first have to complete your training in internal medicine (3 years after medical school) then apply for a gastroenterology fellowship.
Hope this helps.
Question: What career opportunities are open to someone who has a degree in gastroenterology?
Answer: Hi,
Maybe you would like to consider something like Coeliac Disease, members of my family suffer from this and it is really debilitating and causes problems most people would not even think about.
Apart from the disease itself there are issues such as lack of socialisation due to being afraid of going out in case of obvious problems, I'm sure you know what I mean.
Depression due to the above. Osteoporosis, Crohn's, Ulcerative Colitis, ibs. etc
I wish I had of had the opportunity to have been able to work in this field.
I think the above would give you wonderful job satisfaction.

Question: I work in the gastroenterology office in a pediatric hospital. any ideas for a door decorating contest?? We need a catchy door that is specific to our speciality. HELP!
Answer: You could do something depicting Santa watching the children of the world from the north pole with a scope.
Question: What math and science classes will I need to take in college to become an internist in gastroenterology? Calculus? Chemistry? Any help will be appreciated. ^-^
Answer: Well, you are aiming to become a physician, which means that whatever classes you take in college will have to fall under the premed classes.
In general, this means you take all of the following:
1 year of college math (calculus and statistics), 1 year physics with lab, 1 year general chem with lab, 1 year organic chem with lab, 1 year general biology with lab.
In addition to these math and science classes, you'll also probably need to take 1 year of English composition and your typical humanities courses (communications, sociology, psychology, etc.).
Just look at any medical school's admissions website and you'll find the class requirements. Good luck on all your endeavors!
Question: Does anyone know of any good Doctors to see at South Suburban Gastroenterology in South Weymouth, MA? My PCP has referred me to South Suburban and told me to pick a dr. I am having severe stomach pains and she thinks it could be an ulcer (already checked for gallbladder issues) and wants me to see a specialist and possibly have an Endoscopothy (sp??). Any recommended doctors at this practice is very much appreciated. Thanks
Answer: The best one there is Dr. Gregory Bolduc. He has a great bedside manner & he is well qualified & highly regarded in the area. Fairly young (maybe 40) & kind of nerdy but he's a GREAT doc and great guy.
The other doc there that seems to be in high demand is Dr. Cox (can't remember his first name- maybe Phillip?). Not as personable but well respected in the field.
Good luck!
****** just looked it up, Dr. Cox 's first name is Clayland *******
Question: Any Gastroenterology majors out there? Is colon cleansing a good or bad idea? I keep hearing that the colon stores 'plaque' and old fecal matter, toxins etc. on the intestinal walls that can stay there for years. Is it true? Is it a good idea to do a colon cleanse, water or juice fast or enema to clean it out? Please be descriptive and don't just say yes or no. Thanks for your help!
I've never been so grateful for an answer before. Thank you SO much to all the Doctors that contributed and saved me from an unpleasant and costly experience! I can't choose a best answer because all three of you gave comprehensive answers. I guess I'll just put it to a vote and give you all thumbs up! Thanks again!
Answer: It is really not a pleasant thing at first, but highly addictive!!! You’ll feel really great, especially after the 3rd one (it goes in series, most of the time) It feels like you can fly and you can loose anything from 2 kg straight (imagine how much we have $%^^& inside) !!! if you have a good specialist you wont experience any discomfort but do make sure you follow the instruction for the preparation for your fist session, its really important. It might sound strange but even breathing will be so easy, its amazing what it can do for your body.
And, yes all that #$%#$%^ accumulates over the years in your colon blocking it and making your physiological functioning difficult, slowly poisoning you. The best option is to do it regularly every 3 to 6 months, for “cleaner” results..
If you wish to do it yourself, start by adding a little of lemon juice to about 2 Lts of lukewarm-hot water, be careful, it may cause you to feel nauseous and painful but its all part of initiation. Do not expect all the 2Lt to work into your system on the first time, but be persistent… best idea, rather seek a specialist and follow the doctor’s instruction, this will give you better results and less discomfort.
Question: Has anyone ever had Dr. Heidi Chua as a gastroenterology surgeon? I have Crohn's and my doctor thinks its time for me to have resection surgery. I am going to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville and the surgeon that I am assigned is Dr. Heidi Chua. Has anyone ever had experience with her? It would be great to hear feedback.
Answer: hi mark, i am a crohnie like yourself who's had many surgeries.
in regards to checking out the MD, call the office and ask to speak with the office mgr or one of the nurses. heck see if you can make an appt. before surgery and meet with the surgeon yourself to get insight to her bedside manner and expertise.
If you have friends or family that work in the hospital she does, ask them for an opinion. ask your referring MD abou her. Just say what surgeon would you recommend to have surgery on one of your family members?? throw it back at him. Most doctors get the best of the best for their family. If you have a good relationship w/your doctor, then come out and just ask him if she's really good. that is what I've done in the past and it worked out fine. heck, i made a few friends in the ER, Xray dept, and billing being a frequent flyer and got to know which GIs to avoid when it was time to find a new one.
if you go to the crohn's & colitis website, click on events and chapters. there you can find a local ccfa group that meets near jacksonville. give the president of the group a call, see if he/she knows of any members who have had experience w/Dr. Chua
hope this helps. feel free to email if you have questions.
PS: i tried to find a local support group in FL for you but it wouldn't come up. call CCFA's # and ask about a support group in or around Jacksonville.

Question: Want to avoid Pediatric Gastroenterology. How can I help by baby w/Acid Reflux besides switching formula? We are gonna try Enfamil AR starting today. Dr visit is in 2 weeks for follow up.
Answer: There are a ton of meds out there that the dr can put your baby on, starting w/ the easy ones first like zantac and axid (they are weight based dosed so as your baby grows the dose has to go up) then the stronger meds like prevacid.
Honestly the best thing you can do for your baby is go to ta ped gi...
I am a respiratory therapist and a mother of a reflux baby... reflux is very dangerous for babies, it can cause numerous breathing problems for them, and eventually cause reccurent infections and pnemonias.
it is very important to get the proper testing and treatment for your child.
Another thing is 80-100 percent of children who are intollerent to cows milk are intollerent to soy so they cannot use any of the reg formulas and usually a formula like alimentum is best for reflux babies, the intollerence, allergies makes the reflux much much worse.
you can also thicken your babies feedings w/ rice cereal... up to 1 tablespoon per ounce of formula, dr browns bottles makes a cereal nipple (that is what we used w/ my baby it did great)
if the alimentium formula doesn't work there are prescription formulas made out of amino acids called neocate and ellecare.. we used ellecare.. its 54 dollars a can, but very well worth it for your childs well being.
make sure your child is elevated for 30 min after every feeding also
there is an online support group for reflux parents
www.infantrefluxdisease.com
they offer alot of advice and info
Question: is the procedure of Gastroenterology painful? what are the side effects of this? on a scale of 1-10 how painful is the procedure?
Answer: Gastroenterology is just the study of the GI tract, not a specific medical procedure.
If you are thinking of endoscopic examinations of the GI tract, they are potentially very uncomfortable, but not necessarily painful. Often the patient is given a sedative and potentially a local anesthetic to ease the stress and discomfort. Versed is popular for this purpose, because not only does it calm the patient down, but it prevents him from remembering the procedure afterwards.
Question: How many years is resideny in Gastroenterology medicine?
Answer: 3 years internal medicine and then a 3 year fellowship in gastroenterology.
Question: What is the best Gastroenterology Hospital in India ?
Answer: If you are near Delhi, go to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Its one of the best in Asia.
Question: please suggest a good doctor for Gastroenterology in chennai?
Answer: Dr Surendran of Apollo is a top rated doctor. He is HoD in Stanley Govt Hospital and has a clinic in Nungambakkam near the Tennis Stadium.
