"ichthyosis" comes from the Greek word for "fish" and the suffix -osis which means "condition."
Question: is there a way to prevent harlequin ichthyosis before it occurs? or a way to reduce the chance..? thanks.
Answer: no there is no way to really prevent it, its really really extremely rare condition and "before it occurs" you can only be born with it not develop it later in life, it may be hereditary but still its rare,
im not sure you know what Harlequin Ichthyosis, and i really dont think you have it because you would know this answers by now if you did,
but if you scared of getting this disease, like i said you can only be born with it and if somebody has it you can instantly tell they do by their appearance, there is no "when will i get it" its like being born without an arm, same with harlequin ichthyosis, your born with the deformity at birth

Question: Could harlequin ichthyosis be a government experiment gone wrong or some type of hybrid human? Go to youtube.com and watch 2 videos: snake baby and reptilian alien mutant baby.
While you're there, check out Area 51: Interview 06.
Answer: It's a dermatologic disorder- not a conspiracy or mutant.
Question: What are the chances of getting Harlequin Ichthyosis?
Answer: For you 0%
This is a very uncommon condition that you are born with. Plate like scales all over the body at birth. Babies rarely live for very long with this condition as their skin isn't formed very well.
Question: Harlequin Ichthyosis, how do they fix their eyes? I'm doing a project for apbio on harlequin ichthyosis and I was wondering, if they survive long enough like Lucy Betts(18yrs old), how do they fix their eyes? They're usually coagulated with blood and are averted. I'm trying to expand on this topic.
thank you for help (:

Answer: In the image it appears there is severe swelling of the inner surface of the eyelids, the palpebral conjunctiva. I think what you are seeing is very inflamed conjunctival tissue. When the inflamation subsides with treatment, the eyes are reasonably normal. The lids appear abnormally shaped, however, and affected children cannot open their eyes very wide.
In 34 years of practice, I saw only one case and that not as severe as the infant in the picture. She improved, but her skin remained very thick and rough. A most unfortunate condition.
Question: How common is Harlequin type ichthyosis?
Answer: Apart from ichthyosis vulgaris all other forms of ichthyosis are very rare. Ichthyosis vulgaris affects about 1:250 individuals. Ichthyosis occurs worldwide and affects people of all races.

Answer: Oh, he just created a world in which disobedience to him would result in diseases. He had no idea which diseases would be created or who they would affect, poor thing.
Question: Can someone tell me what harlequin type ichthyosis is and how it happens? And is it contagious ?
Answer: Harlequin-type ichthyosis (also harlequin ichthyosis, ichthyosis congenita, Ichthyosis fetalis or keratosis diffusa fetalis), a skin disease, is the most severe form of congenital ichthyosis, characterized by a thickening of the keratin layer in fetal human skin. In sufferers of the disease, the skin contains massive, diamond-shaped scales, and tends to have a reddish color. In addition, the eyes, ears, mouth, and other appendages may be abnormally contracted. The scaly keratin greatly limits the child's movement. Because the skin is cracked where normal skin would fold, it is easily pregnable by bacteria and other contaminants, resulting in serious risk of fatal infection.
Question: Pro-lifers, why shouldn't abortion be given to a fetus that's diagnosed with Harlequin type ichthyosis? Harlequin type ichthyosis, give it a search.
Yes, especially when every breath is followed by a sensation of burning pain.
Answer: Where there is breath, there is still hope.
“If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” John 8:36
Edit:
“If there is a God and that God is a good God, then why is there suffering?” “What kind of a God is it that has created evil?” Ever heard those comments? Ever made them yourself? You’re not alone. Many people have thought the same thing. But that’s not straight thinking. Let me tell you the way it truly is. God did not create evil. God created perfection. God made man perfectly free, and freedom therefore gave rise to evil. In order to love, we must be free to choose to love. Then, in order to choose to love, we have to be able to choose not to love.
Which kind of love do you want from others? A forced love or a free love? Which sounds better, “I have to love you” or “I love you”?
Question: what would you do if your baby had Harlequin Ichthyosis? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=im0ohYH5zCU&feature=related
i mean i recently discovered it and i dont know how i would go about it if my kid was born wit it
sorry about the miscategory
Answer: Excellent question, because ichthyosis is genetic and can be discovered through amniocentesis or CVS. Thus, you need not worry about your child being condemned to a horrid, shortened, life, if you carefully plan your family, including appropriate testing and genetic counseling. It's the truest form of love.
Additional details: We've got people here asking three times a week why "abbreviation" is such a long word; I don't think you have anything to apologize for. This is good information in any category.
Question: i was researching a disease called harlequin ichthyosis? and i found out it's a genetic desease that happens every two hundred thousand years so i asked myself hey it could lead us to what killed the dinasours what i really want to know right now is where did it come from exactly how did it form?well u probably can't answear that so check out this video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oLmhGb4Zd…
http://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition=harlequ…
every two hundred thousand years from a certain family
Answer: I think you mean every 200K BIRTHS. It is actually around 1 in 300K births. It is rare, but not that rare. It is more common in families where there is psoriasis. Most of these children die within hours of birth. A few survive, but it is a horrible life, terribly disfiguring.
Question: harlequin ichthyosis or harlequin babies.....? I saw a program on TLC last week regarding this condition. It is a pretty horrific and devastating diagnosis for any new parent. My question, is there testing for this gene, to see if you carry the dominant gene? I don't know if I should post this question here...
thanks :)
Answer: Yes there is testing and they know what genes cause it but I don't think its very accurate in determining whether you could pass on this disease, it usually found through ultasound testing during pregnancy

Question: wat is harlequin ichthyosis?
Answer: Harlequin Ichthyosis is a severe genetic disorder that mainly affects the skin. Infants with this condition are born with very hard, thick skin covering most of their bodies. The skin forms large diamond-shaped plates seperated by deep cracks (fissures). These skin abnormalities affect the shape of the eyelids, nose, mouth, and ears, and restrict movement of the arms and legs. Restricted movement of the chest can lead to breathing difficulties and respiratory failure.
Do a web search on "harlequin ichthyosis" and you can read through the listed sites. You can also click on to the "images" and see actual photos of this condition.
Question: Why did god make Harlequin type ichthyosis? Dear christian friends.
Would you care to justify this?:
http://www.emedicine.com/derm/images/148…
Is anyone seriously going to tell me that god INTENDED for babies to come out like that?
For more pictures, just stick the words "Harlequin Fetus" into Google Image Search.
Anyone care to reconsider their stance on abortion, by the way?
Answer: Holy doodie that's uh... *shudders* no comment.
Question: Are Harlequin type ichthyosis babies god's way of being sarcastic? http://asylumeclectica.com/asylum/malady…
So, why does god allow that?
a skin disease, is the most severe form of congenital ichthyosis, characterized by a thickening of the keratin layer in fetal human skin. Answer: If that thing came out of my vagina, I would run away screaming. Can you imagine? Looking down at your baby for the first time and seeing....that?
*Note: There is one harlequin baby who lived to be an adult (most die as babies) and he's a triathlete. There are also 2 girls in the UK who are surviving with it. They have to slather themselves with lotion like 20 times a day because their skin just keeps cracking and drying and the cells keep multiplying at a ridiculous speed.
EDIT: The triathlete's name is Ryan González, he is from San Diego.
From Wikipedia: "In San Diego a young man, Ryan González, has this condition and has not only survived to adulthood but also thrives as a triathlete. His treatment involves dosing with isotretinoin (also known as Accutane), the constant use of lotions to keep the skin supple, and use of a very high-caloric diet of at least 7,500 calories a day, including a nightly feeding tube of pure protein due to the constant shedding of his skin, which is believed to shed ten to forty times faster than unaffected skin."
Question: www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncecwD3xRWc........ type ichthyosis...is the baby still alive? If so....DETAIL is the baby alive? are they letting it live? what kind of a genetic mutation what this be considered. i mean, i'm studying ap bio, and i just want to know whats up with that. And i honestly think some people need to chill. i glanced at some of the comments, and a lot of people have some pretty rude stuff down there. But, whats gonna happen to the poor thing??
*Please don't give me copy, cut, n past frm wikipedia!*
Where was the baby born?
I heard it was India, but on youtube, thats not hindi they're speaking!
