Question: thrush or hairy leukoplakia? for a year i have had what looks like thrush or hairy leukoplakia on both sides of my tongue. theyre almost uniform on each side. some days it looks like it is going away, but then other days it looks much worse. towards the back its kinda of thicker and im able to scrape off alot of it, but not all of it. how serious could this be?
Answer: when did it start?
have you talk to your doctor about this?
Question: At a routine physical, when the doctor looks in your mouth, will he see hairy leukoplakia if its there?
Answer: Yes, but only is the doctor is looking for it. Most doctors don't begin their look until the oropharynx
Question: Is it possible to have leukoplakia on leteral sides of tongue? i' ve been smokin for 7 years.. i realised that i had leukoplakia on leteral sides of my tongue...is it possible to have leukoplakia on leteral sides of tongue, or is it hairy leukoplakia which is locate leteral sides of tongue..
Answer: Yes, you can have leukoplakia on the sides of your tongue; hairy leukoplakia almost exclusively occurs in those with deficient immunity (HIV or malignancy). This is something you should definitely have checked out by your dentist or oral surgeon and possibly biopsied - better safe than sorry.
Question: Could this be leukoplakia or hairy leukoplakia? http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/894/t…

Answer: If its either of the two it would be leukoplakia. However, leukoplakia is usually a white coating on your gums, i don't see any white in these pictures.
Hairy leukoplakia affects the side of the tongue and it would be a lot more noticeable.
If you're really concerned go see a dentist, although i don't think its anything to worry about. Good luck
Question: Is my white tongue caused my sinus problems? Ever since my allergies started acting up, I've been having a white tongue. I looked in the mirror today the tongue has a slight film but the sides of my tongue were a little more whiter.I kinda freaked out because it looked like hairy leukoplakia (sign of HIV) even though my bf is the only partner and I've been tested in the past 6 months.
Am I just overreacting? The hairy leukoplakia would be more obvious right?
Answer: oral thrush ,
Question: What is wrong with my tongue? In March, I developed a white cut or sore on the right side of my tongue. This has happened before, and I assumed it would simply go away after a few days. Instead, the sore remained, and I developed white ridges on both sides of my tongue. My tongue was sore and sort of stiff. I waited, but it didn't go away for several days. I called a nurse hotline twice, but they could only guess (incorrectly) what it might be. (It's clearly not oral thrush.) Of course, I researched this condition extensively on the Internet, but the thing that sounds closest to it is "hairy leukoplakia". It can't be that, however, because I don't have the associated health care issues. The symptoms declined and almost disappeared as recently as April 20th, but now they're returning again! It's very uncomfortable and makes tasting, eating and drinking difficult. Not surprisingly citrus, coffee and wine seem to make the condition worse, but abstaining from these doesn't make it disappear. Any ideas?
Oh yeah, to all of you geniuses who keep saying "Why don't you just go see a doctor?" -- I don't have health insurance at the moment. So either answer the question I asked -- if you can -- or spare me the ignorant advice. Besides that, based on previous experience, there seems to be little value in spending half the day at an HMO to see a doctor who also won't really know what the problem is without actually researching it. I'm looking for someone who actually has knowleadge that they can share. Thanks!
Answer: I had a very similar problem recently. I don't remember any "stiffness," but the rest of the description sounds the same. I found I was allergic, or at least sensitive to, a common ingredient in toothpastes: sodium lauryl sulfate. It's in almost all toothpastes, but drugstores carry a little larger variety -- and there are some available. Sensodyne Gel is what I found I had to use and it took care of the problem. I'm personally switching to tooth soap, but my order hasn't arrived yet so I can't comment on that.
Question: Roof Of Mouth White? Over the last month I have noticed that the color of the roof of my mouth is more white than it is pink. I have done some research and I think I have ruled out Leukoplakia, as every single article or explaination of it have never said that it occurs on the roof of the mouth, only on the tongue, or sides of the cheeks. It causes me no pain or discomfort at all, I don't even notice it. It also isn't thrush, as it can't be wiped off. Any ideas about what it is, or if I should be worried?
Again -
Pretty much ruled out Leukoplakia (And it definately isnt Hairy Leukoplakia, as it doesn't appear or match that description at all.)
Also ruled out thrush.
I was thinking maybe it was brushing habits or the mouth wash I have been using, any help would be great! Please and thank you. Please no rude comments or anything impolite, it's starting to worry me.
Too be honest I'm not sure if it has always been like this. It might have been, I only noticed it one morning when I was flossing my teeth in a friends apartment, I guess I noticed it there because he has windows in his bathroom and the lighting was much better. I don't notice it in my bathroom.
Answer: Yarg!
Ye be dyin' o' de' skurvey,

Question: Question About Mouth? I'm really confused - I have noticed that the sides of the roof of my mouth are white (Not really directly the gums by the teeth, but not in the middle of the roof of mouth either.) It's white on both sides in the same-ish spot on both sides. It isnt Leukoplakia, it isn't OHL (Hairy Leukoplakia) and it isn't Thrush. It doesn't hurt when pressed upon, doesn't bleed when I brush or anything else, and I never ever would even have noticed it if I hadn't looked on the roof of my mouth one day. I havent run across any description of anything that matches so I'm really confused - and worried. I thought it might be from my wisdom teeth because I have heard it can cause the area surrounding to be white, but I really don't know - I have a dental appointment soon, but it's driving me crazy and making me stressed - anyone know what it may be?
Answer: It could be leukoplakia still, not hairy leukoplakia.. Or one of these, candidiasis may have discomfort though), some oral cancers can start with white patches, although if it's on both sides seems odd, certain std's can leave white or whitish gray patches on the roof of your mouth. I'll get back to ya if I remember something else.
Question: Afraid to have contracted this disease two years ago, please a doctor help me...? Can someone answer me,please?
Two years ago i was walking with a friend of mine who has a son(at the time 2 years old)and while we were talking he found a syringe with a nedle and when i saw him i tried to remove it from his hand and i am afraid that while i was doing this the nedle penetrated into my skin, exactly in the palm of my hand. There was no blood but i had the feeling that the nedle penetrated my skin.I have never had sex(i am 20 but it is not strange in the culture of my country to be virgin at this age), or made use of drugs, and i am getting crazy when i think that i may have contracted Aids.I have suffered from thrush of the mouth since i was 14 but in these two years it also happened to me to have mouth herpes(small ones occurring rarely) i have got flu one time each year, but now i cought a cold and i am having coughs and sneezing and headache.I refused to go out with the guy i like because i am afraid, i may have Aids, i have a job interview but they are going to make me a medical clearance prior to employement.I have not had symptoms such as rushes, fever or diarrea, but my tongue looks strange ,it is coated with patches, fissures and some times with some white lines on both sides, can this be hairy leukoplakia.Twice i had sweats before menstuations i think, but my friend at the medicine faculty says that this time i cought a cold very easily.Aids is not frequent in my country and i think that the syringe was there a day before i touched it,but still i am really getting crazy. How long can the virus of Aids survive in the nedle of the syringe.I am afraid to lose the guy i love and the best job i could ever have, and above all the idea people have of me.Please if a doctor sees this..help me!Sorry for my english, i am a foreigner.Please,please,please...
Answer: Get tested. It is the only reliable way to know if you had been infected.
HIV can only survive for a very short time outside of the body. The virus on the syringe could very well have been dead -- assuming that there was any virus to begin with.
Try not to worry yourself sick. Have a test and speak to a counsellor.
