Answer: When symptoms appear
The time from the initial malaria infection until symptoms appear (incubation period) generally ranges from:1
9 to 14 days for Plasmodium (P.) falciparum.
12 to 18 days for P. vivax and P. ovale.
18 to 40 days for P. malariae.
Symptoms can appear in 7 days. Occasionally, the time between exposure and signs of illness may be as long as 8 to 10 months with P. vivax and P. ovale.
The incubation period may be longer if you are taking medicine to prevent infection (chemoprophylaxis) or because you have some immunity due to previous infections

Question: How high is the possible infection with Dengue fever in the Middst of April until May,8th at the BVI's? Hello,
I am going to travel to the Brritish Virgin Islands from April, 17th to May, 8th 2008 and I am a little bit afraid of getting infected with Dengue fever.
How high is the potential risk to get it at the BVI's during the time I am going to stay there?
Thank you.
Answer: If you are going to an area where dengue fever is endemic, such as the British Virgin Islands, the risk for travellers being infected is about 1 in 1000, although the real risk may be higher or lower for a number of reasons.
The CDC recommends taking precautions against getting bitten by mosquitoes, the principal vector or carrier of dengue fever.
Question: Can Dengue fever relapse if one has already had it? I read in the encyclopedic volume 2 "Diseases" that if one has had Dengue fever, that it can relapse every five years because of the original infection... is this true?
Answer: I believe they mean if it is not treated properly. The incubation period for relapsing fever is five to 15 days with the average being seven. Antibiotics must wait until the fever has gone down. with fluids and pain relievers, and rest about the only thing you can do. Of course after the antibiotics most people recover. If untreated it can turn into Dengue Hemorrhagic fever. and this is just about untreatable. Very few people live after having the Hemorrhagic kind of Dengue Fever. The mosquitoes of course cause it, and if you are bitten again, you can get it again. Not necessarily a relapse, but a reinfection.

Question: How does dengue fever spread? Pls give me informaton about mosquitoes spreading dengue fever. Pls give me a maximum number of 3 tips that tells me that how mosquitoes spread dengue fever. Thank you.
Answer: Mode of transmission
Dengue is transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito, particularly Aedes aegypti- female mosquito. . This was first recognized by workers in Queensland early in the 20th century. Aedes aegypti breeds in fresh water and particularly in man made containers such as old tyres, pot plant holders, buckets and tree hollows in urban areas.
Aedes albopictus is a mosquito common in South East Asia and Papua New Guinea and can also be an important vector. Other Aedes species are involved in the enzootic monkey cycle
The principal vector mosquito, Ae. aegypti, prefers to feed on humans during the daytime and most frequently is found in or near human habitations. There are two peak periods of biting activity, in the morning for several hours after daybreak and in the late afternoon for several hours before dark. The mosquito may feed at any time during the day, however, especially indoors, in shady areas, or when it is overcast. Mosquito breeding sites include artificial water containers such as discarded tires, uncovered barrels, buckets, flower vases or pots, cans, and cisterns.
During the first months of 2007,over 16,000 cases have been reported in Paraguay, of which around 100 have been detected as DHF cases. This new epidemic is expected to continue in Paraguay for several months, given the forecast of continuous rain all through the summer. Ten deaths have also been reported, including recently a high ranking member of the Ministry of Health. The epidemic has been the root of a scandal in the Paraguayan Department of Health, where one official has resigned because he had approved the use of expired batches of insecticide to control the mosquito vectors of dengue.[10][11] The disease has propagated to Argentina (where it is not considered endemic), in almost all cases by people who recently arrived from Paraguay.[12] In the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso do Sul, which borders on Paraguay, the number of cases in March 2007 is estimated to be more than 45,000.[11] Epidemics in the states of Ceará, Pará, São Paulo, and Rio de Janeiro have taken the Brazilian national tally of cases this year to over 70,000, with upwards of 20 deaths. The proportion of cases registered as DHF is reported to be higher than in previous years
Question: I have been to Cuba before but now worry about dengue fever. Should I risk it? It always felt like home (in Varadero). But I have not been for 6 years and reports of dengue fever, of unsanitary conditions in previously clean hotels (in travellers reviews) worry me. What is the present situation? Really.
Answer: just don't go to that craphole
Question: how'll someone get Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever instead of Dengue Fever? only after repeated bites by mosquitoes? i would like to know that why dengue fever is divided into DF and DHF? is it for the different approach of managements? how will someone get DHF instead of DF? i read in some literatures saying that only after repeated bites by the mosquito,DHF will only develop in the patient?is that true?any experimental evidence to support that? hoping for a reply, thank you very much.
Answer: you could catch both from being bitten by a female aedes aegypti mosquito. those terms were used to describe the stage in which the patient is in. DHF/dengue hemorrhagic fever means its getting worse. in dengue you watch for 2 things, initially we note a decrease in the platelet count, then there is a hemoconcentration later on as seen by elevated hematocrit levels. that is the time you worry over bleeding tendencies when both decrease in platelet and hemoconcentration are present.
Question: Is Dengue Fever contagious between people? Someone I have close contact with has Dengue fever and I was wondering if I need to worry about getting it from her.
Answer: Dengue is only spread through Aedes mosquito bites and not through personal contact. Aedes exist in the US , and even if your friend got it in the Caribbean snd came home, there is still a chance of thransmission through US mosquitoes, though it is small.
It sounds strange to say, but the mosquitoes you want to avoid are the ones that bit her ABOUT A WEEK AGO. It takes that long before a mosquito which has picked up the virus from an infected person can spread it through another bite. So dont worrry too much a mosquito that bits you both on the same day. (Take a long road trip together- you'd have nothing to fear.)
You should use mosquito control while you are both together. Aedes bites by day.

Answer: The link that "jedidoughboy" gave is very good.
Dengue is very similar to malaria with symptoms. It is contracted by a mosquito bite, the victim has fevers where they are alternatively hot and sweaty or cold and sweaty for about 6-7 days then 1-2 days of recovery followed by another few days of bad fever.
Rest and plenty of fluids is the only treatment.

Question: Dengue fever from mosquitoes from travel to Central America / Costa Rica? I just returned from a trip to Costa Rica and got bitten by a mosquito. I am worried that I might get dengue fever because it is very common there. Has anyone else traveled in Central America and gotten bug bitten without getting dengue fever? Or has anyone gotten it?
Answer: Not to worry. I live in Central America and have been mosquito bitten thousands of times with no ill effects. Dengue is not as prevalent as people seem to believe. There is only one species of mosquito that transmits dengue. It is found in heavily populated areas and bites only during the day. So if you were in a rural area and got bitten at night you have reduced the odds already.
Question: My friend has Dengue Fever will he be okay? I have a friend who went to help the poor in Haiti and now he is sick with Dengue Fever. I have never heard of this...will he be okay?
Answer: There is no specific treatment for classic dengue fever, and most people recover within 2 weeks. To help with recovery, health care experts recommend
* Getting plenty of bed rest
* Drinking lots of fluids
* Taking medicine to reduce fever
CDC advises people with dengue fever not to take aspirin. Acetaminophen or other over-the-counter pain-reducing medicines are safe for most people.
For severe dengue symptoms, including shock and coma, early and aggressive emergency treatment with fluid and electrolyte replacement can be lifesaving.
