Answer: Take a proton pump inhibitor like Aciphex, Protonix, Prilosec, Prevacid, Axid, etc. about 20-30 minutes before you start to drink.
Drink water in between.
Eat starchy foods with your drinks (like bread, crackers, etc.)
As you know, alcohol is not the best thing for your esophagus.
Good luck.

I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!
Three part answer information, what not to do, and what to do!
INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, or can be Hereditary
The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.
G.E.R.D. is caused by too much acid being created in your stomach. This can lead to or cause ulcers, esophagus damage, heartburn and/or damage in the mouth. . Other symptoms that can be found in a few cases are dizziness, tingling in limbs, numbness of Limbs, Chest/Back pain focused on the left side (in most cases), and shortness/difficulty breathing.
WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:
Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
Roughage (Berries and Nuts)
Onions
WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.
I would also look to putting Cinnamon and Ginger in you diet, they have been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.
Question: what types of food exactly, can I eat with gerd disease? I have had gerd for years now and will need an operation to fix. I have been unable to find recipes or the right foods to eat to, try to help with the heartburn problems I experience I get severe burning and spit blood and vomit frequently. At least three to four times a week for the past three years. I have cut a lot out of my diet but dont know exactly what I should or should not eat. I have been on several perscriptions and am now taking prevacid tablets twice daily for the past two years.
Answer: I have GERD but not as severe as yours. Since you did not say when the surgery is, I suggest you get the surgery asap. The lining of the esophagus can and probably is causing this stress on your eating habits. Also, since you mentioned you have been spitting blood, which may be blood mixed in with the stomach acid and shreds of your esophagus lining; also the vomiting, you need this surgery very soon. I'm an intern md and I highly suggest you get the surgery soon. If you wait any longer, worse things can/will happen. And, I am on Prevacid as well and know what you are going through. Please take my advice and I wish you well.
Question: Is there a connection between GERD and HYPOGLYCEMIA? Is there a connection between GERD and HYPOGLYCEMIA. Because I have sympotms of both the conditions.
Answer: No there is NO connection.
BUT.....
You could be suffering from either of these conditions. But they are not related at all.
GERD being reflux.
Hypoglycemia being low blood sugars.
I suggest if you feel it is a true problem or really worries you, to go and see your Doctor.
Question: What are some good foods to eat while on bland food diet for gerd? What are some good foods to eat and help your body bounch back from gerd and stomach ulcers issues and stomach and chest back discomfort and burning?
Answer: Chicken and Rice
Grilled Meats (unseasoned)

Question: what is the cancer that is commonly misdiagnosed as GERD and is there a cure? My sister was diagnosed with GERD recently, but now she is being told that she has to get a biopsy, because she may have been misdiagnosed and has a good chance of having cancer. Her doctor also told her that if she does have cancer that it would be a death sentence, I need to know if that is true.
Answer: Another possiblity is that your sister has a gastrinoma - which is a very rare type of cancer that is usually found only in people with MENS syndrome - I can't remember what exactly the acronym means but it is a hereditary type of cancer that is usually fatal because the person gets many different types of cancer very easily. If there is a big history of cancer in your family - the doc might be talking about that.
However - not all gastrinomas are related to the syndrome - and the ones that aren't related are curable.
Best of luck to you and your sister!

Question: What health-food stores are good for people with acid reflux/GERD? I have a condition called GERD that is causing me a lot of pain and discomfort and I am looking for something that will help ease it by eating foods that acually help me instead of cause more pain. Please, any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank You and God Bless;)
Answer: Well i have GERD or Acid reflux disease also & if your wondering what foods make it better i can help you out with that.1st off you CANNOT eat any spicy foods you have to eat blan stuff for a while such as crackers & applesauce & vegetables & stuff like that but when u get discomfort try eating some crackers it works for me because the crackers kind of absorb some of the acid. But you have to be on a diet for a while no spicy foods,no citric acids such as orange juice because that can make it worse,& you aren't suppose to eat until you get full you have to eat in portions. If you have anymore ?'s feel free to email me.Hope I helped :)

Question: Gerd ????????/? I was diagnosed with Gerd (Gastric Esophigal Reflux Desiese) i have chest pains and have ben to the doctor numorous times because of this worried that it could be cardiac related but they keep telling me that is it related to my gerd the wierd thing is that it is mostly left sided does anybody have this same symptom
Answer: I raise my hand. Yes, I have it and so does my Mom.
Drink lots of water when it happens to flush the extra acid back down. I don't know if it helps, but I lean to favor that side so the water flows over the problem area. I recommend drinking a glass of water before eating. Chew your food well and take very small bites. Drink often while eating.
There are medicines that can help you control it. Nexium claims to help heal the affected area. Prilosec may help you control it. There are others. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your choices. Some of the other medications were not right for me. Some have after affects when you forget or stop using them.
Stress like worrying about the heart concern makes the GERD worse. Try to relax and review the links below.

Question: What home remedies are there for GERD or heartburn? I have taken omeprazole for far too long. My dr did not tell me to limit it to 14 days every 4 months. Now I'm worried. Any permanent damage and how can I treat this thru diet or any alternative medicines?
Answer: You would have to look at your lifestyle and maybe make lifestyle changes (weight loss, changes in eating habits, no smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, posture changes while sleeping), the following natural and herbal remedies have been known to provide relief for GERD/Acid Reflux symptoms:
Amla (Indian Gooseberry)
Aniseed, Peppermint and Lavender Tea
Pineapple Enzymes
Organic Grapefruit Skins
Chicory Root Tea
Chamomile
Slippery Elm (Ulmus Fulva)
... and the one I think sounds the BEST -
Cinnamon Raisin Bread:
Cinnamon raisin bread is among the effective herbal remedies for acid reflux. Cinnamon has a reputation for being a reliable antacid as well as being an effective antiseptic and remedy for controlling cold and flu. To create this simple remedy, toast some raisin bread. Spread it with butter, cinnamon, and cardamom. Chew the cinnamon bread slowly before swallowing it.
If you are a tea drinker, try some of the teas listed above, but if you like cinnamon bread - well - why not?? LOL!!
I noticed that the internet was filled with pages of stuff they all wanted to sell you. I finally found this site. If you are interested in these other teas and remedies, check out the website below and it will tell you all about them.
Good Luck and Feel Better
Question: How can I know if I have GERD, a respiratory condition, or a pulled muscle? The discomfort is in the middle of the chest and occurs sometimes after eating. Ibuprofen helped the discomfort.
Answer: Since Dan W corrected you .. let me correct him ... its is gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) ....
The only way to evaluate this is to be seen by a physician ... this is a complex diagnosis ... although people will lead you to believe otherwise .... chest discomfort should always be treated carefully .... because of the obvious ... if you wannna play MD ... and you miss the diagnosis ...it could be fatal ... be safe ... for you ... and those who love you .... best wishes to a quick recovery
Question: Is it possible to get a server cough from gerd? I had a stomch wrap about four years agp due to having four times the normal amount of acid present in my stomach. Now I have a cronic cough and I am starting to get heart burn again after four years of being free from it. I can actually feel the acid seeping into my lungs. Does this make any sence?
Answer: yes. Coughing is a symptom of GERD, plus GERD can trigger bronchial irritation and inflammation and set off bronchiospasms (asthma flares). Talk to your doctor.
Question: Can shortness of breath be related to GERD? I was just wondering if a sort or "smothering" feeling could be related to GERD?
Thanks.
Answer: Gerd causes lot of other problems if you do not take care of it, like asthma because of the damage to your esophagus. take some protonix or nexuim, if not then take over the counter drugs like zantac, prilosec, tagmet..also lay off the greasy, high fat, spicy foods and caffiene..good luck
