Question: Celiac Sprue? I have Celiac Sprue. I as diagnosis about 12 years ago. My problem is I was skinny for many many years and now being on a 100%Gluten Free diet for the last 3 years (I was in denial for a long time) I have gain 35 pounds (also I have had 3 children in the last 12 years) I was wondering WHY???? So many Celiacs patients can't gain weight. How come I have???
Answer: Celiac patients don't gain weight. That has been disproven by at least me. I was 50 pounds overweight when I was diagnosed. Originally celiacs were thought of as the children who were failing to thrive. However celiac is being diagnosed later in life and it is found in thin and fat people and those in between. It sounds like you are at one with your diet now and unfortunately are putting on the pounds like the rest of the US. What works for my wife and I is to weigh each morning and if our weight went up the previous day then we ate too much or didn't exercise enough and we adjust accordingly for the next day or so to keep our weight in range. My wife did this and lost 35 pounds over about 6 months and we record the end of the month weight too so there is a written record to look at too. Just a small change in eating habits over time will make a big difference in weight.
You are probably gaining weight because your body is absorbing more of the nutrients and stuff since your intestines have healed. I had never had high cholesterol until just recently-- maybe for the same reason.
Question: celiac sprue? I have been having alot of diarrhea lately and celiac sprue runs in my family... do you think i have it?
I havnt really had any other symptoms, but it just started like a couple of weeks ago, so i thought it might just start off slow. My Grandma, her two sisters [my great aunts] 2 of my second cousins and my uncle all have it. My mom takes more after her dad's side of the family so i have a fealing that she wont get it, but i get alot of my trates from my grandma's side of the family.
Answer: The only way to know is to get tested. I would think with your family history it is HIGHLY likely you may have it if u have the symptoms. Remember the symptoms arent just gastro,t hey can range from infertility, hair loss, dental problems, neuropathis (RLS, Raynauds), and memory loss.
With that many ppl having it, Id say itd be VERY smart to get tested.
U can do the blood test and/or the endoscopy but u need to be eating gluten for it to be accurate. U can get genetically tested either at home thru a company like www.enterolab.com (their results have mixed reviews, proceed with caution). Or bc of your family history your doc may run the genetic test himself (some docs do, some dont.)
Best of luck, these sites may help, feel free to email me for any further help.

Question: Celiac sprue? I have celiac disease. Here are the complications I've had so far, and I"m wondering if others have them too, and what you've done... or any recommendations. Anything helps! I'm not eating gluten anymore, but I still have a messed up system.
Turning vegan helped a bit with fatigue.
psoriasis, anemia, fatigue, poor immune system, dry skin, depression, headaches, random tummy pains once in a while, sore joints (I'm 21--shouldn't have those!), and dry, brittle nails and hair.
One big ball of sexiness, to be sure.
**Celiac disease is otherwise known as gluten intolerance. Gluten=the protein in wheat, oats, barley, rye, spelt, kamut, teff.
It messes up the intestines when gluten is ingested, resulting in damage and malabsorption, digestive problems, etc.
Malnourishment, illnesses, depression, nutrient deficiencies, the list is endless. Anything that can result in not absorbing nutrients correctly. **

Question: How does Celiac Sprue affect your other organs besides your intestines and colon? And what books do you recommend for reading to educate myself on the disease itself. All I can find are GF cookbooks. I want to edcuate myself on the disease and how it affect my entire body system. If I eat gluten, how will that affect my other organs, blood system, skin... I have another autoimmune disease, so adding this one on top of it isn't helping. But my 2 doctors don't seem concerned & tell me very little. And I feel like crap 24/7. Low energy and weak.
Can anyone advice me on where to go for more education onf the celiac disease so I can help myself? Thanks!
Answer: Because Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder, this means it can effect virtually any system in your body ranging from neurological function to circulation. If you're looking for a good read, you may want to try Living Gluten Free for Dummies, it's one of those black and yellow dummies books. I found my copy on www.amazon.com. There are also a ton of great websites out there with infinite wisdom. My favorite websites are www.celiac.com and www.glutenfreeforum.com, but there are many many others. Just be careful of privately owned websites as the information isn't always up to date. Celiac.com is probably your best resource for information. Glutenfreeforum.com is probably your best resource for support. The people on that message board are wonderful, so ask away. My name on there is Guhlia, so say hi when you stop by.
What other autoimmune disease do you have? For your lack of energy, try taking a vitamin high in B vitamins and iron. Have you been tested for anemia? Many Celiacs are anemic. If you haven't gone gluten free yet, please do so immediately. Eating gltuen can cause cancer, osteoperosis, osteopenia, peripheral neuropathy, etc...
Question: what is the difference between celiac sprue and celiac disease?
Answer: Celiac sprue and Celiac disease are one and the same. Please see the webpages for more details on Celiac disease-sprue.
Question: Is there a cure for celiac sprue? what is the cure? Are the symtoms treable? i need help on this its a project that i am doing and i would like 2 know some of this information this is a hard topic for me if u help i will really appreciated.......
Answer: There is no cure, patients are treated by a strict gluton free diet. Just do an internet search for celiac disease, theres alot of information on the internet.
Question: Losing weight/dieting with Celiac Sprue -HELP!? I am looking for a diet plan, losing weight, exercise plan to follow that I can incorporate into my Celiac Sprue/Gluten Free diet now. I know I have to exercise more to burn the calories. That I can do and do but with recently being diagnosed with Celiac Sprue and having to eat gluten free foods for the rest of my life, is there a diet plan that is healthy that I can go by to watch the fat, carbs, calories, etc.? There are millions of books and websites for diet plans but not one is for people that have to avoid gluten foods. Can anyone out there help me!?!?!?
Fruits and veges are basically what I eat now. I've tried two types of GF pastas but hate the texture. Any personal suggestions? And any recipes with chicken and fish? I'm getting potatoed out!
Thanks!
Answer: I have celiac too. I recommend trying Atkins or southbeach diet.
Question: Do you have Celiac Sprue ? 1. How old were you when diagnosed?
2. What made you get tested?
3. Do you buy or prepare your own breads, pastries?
Just curious about others. I was diagnosed as having Celiac Sprue. I have been on a gluten free diet for 13 years now. Only bad side affect, is if I eat at a restaurant and something is contaminated.
Sometimes when traveling, (even with my restraunt card in hand ) eating out can not be avoided. I travel for work & training. I am a member of celiac.org.
Answer: 1. 24 years
2. 15 years of chronic constipation, bloating, bleeding and eventually infertility (I was uninsured for most of life so wasnt abel to find good care til I graduated college and got ins with job)
3. I buy bc I am a lazy baker!! I love Kinninnick's breads, donuts and pizzas. I love Pamela's mixs, the chocolate cake is AWESOME--even glutenoids can't tell! I like Tinkyada pasta.
FYI: OUtback, Chilis and several others have gluten free menus! Outbacks' is online and in rest. Chili's is online. When in doubt, order food naked. Are you don Yahoo's SillyYak group? Awesome group of Sillys!
