Question: Is one of the symptoms of connns syndrom extreme weakness and tiredness with hyoertension? I have hyperaldosteronism . I am taking aldactone 3times a day.50 mg. I am also on lotrel 5/20 I can hardly functrion I am so tired and weak.I dont know if the tiredned ia a symptom of the Conns syndrome
Answer: Generally speaking, the symptoms of Conn's syndrome are:
High blood pressure
Muscle cramps
Headaches
Metabolic alkalosis
Low calcium levels
Low calcium levels can lead to other problems and symptoms such as:
Cardiac arrest
Muscle contractions
Carpopedal spasm
Extreme weakness and tiredness are not normal symptoms of Conn's syndrome, or hypertension. However, they are symptoms of stress and depression. I'm no medical expert, but I would see a physician as soon as possible. Perhaps even get a second opinion.
Question: Aldosterone/Renin Ratio query - just a basic maths q really.. :)? I have a query regarding the use of aldo/renin ratio in the diagnosis of primary hyperaldesteronism (Conns Syndrome)
Disclaimer - I'm asking this question because I'm absolutely retarded at maths so apologies if this is painfully obvious to even 6th graders
in the context of
"An ARR cutoff of 23.6 ng/dL per ng/mL · hour had a sensitivity of 97% and specificity of 94%. A cutoff of 66.9 yielded 100% specificity"
23.6?? how is that a ratio. I thought ratios were like...1:2
can someone explain this embarrassingly obvious and basic concept to me. Are they just dividing the ratio to get the percentage???
thanks!
Answer: Hi,
A ratio must only be positive, it has not to be lower than 1. Add 100g of salt to 900g of water : you have a 0.1 ratio of salt to water. But you could also say you have a 10 ratio of water to salt.
A ratio should not have a unit. In your case it looks like the "ratio" has a unit. Also, look at the units again : one of the terms uses dL, and the other uses mL :
23.6 ng/dL per ng/mL · hour = 23.6 ng/dL per 100 ng/dL · hour = 0.236 hour^-1
Bear in mind that this is only a strictly mathematical answer. In practice "ratios" with a unit, or scaled by some arbitrary factor are often used.
Question: Which US Senators do you consider to be suffering from addled brain syndrome? Here's my list:
1. Senator John "Cornball" Cornyn of Texas;
2. Senator Harry "The Hat" Reid of Nevada;
3. Senator Robert "Thunder" Byrd of West Va.
4. Senator Richard "Meathead" Shelby of Alabama;
5. Senator Charles "the Schnorrer" Schumer of NY;
6. Senator Mitch "the Itch" McConnell of Kentucky;
7. Senator Barb "the Babe" Mikulski of Md.
8. Senator Barb "Whiney Hiney" Boxer of Ca.
9. Senator Larry "the Shoe" Craig of Wyo.;
10. Senator Roland "Black Blago" Burrus of Ill.;
11. Senator Chris "Mod Squad" Dodd of Conn.;
12. Senator Judd "Jughead" Gregg of Vermont;
13. Senator John "I married a ***** for money" Kerry;
Only 13??? I can't believe it.
Attention: Nancy "Dopey" Pelosi and Barney "I Want A" Frank are in the House of Representatives. That is all.
Oh, my. I forgot to add Chuck "Outraged" Grassley - a true moron from Iowa who always gets outraged at whatever the polls say the people are outraged at.
Answer: Good list. Not complete, but a good list. Barney Frank should be on there as should Nancy "mousey" Pelosi! So many, many more. Not enough space here.
ADAM: Kerry did, so did McCain. Any probably many others. Who cares? Not me.
