Question: Pulmonic Stenosis? MY 1YR OLD DAUGHTER HAS TO GO TO THE DR ABOUT THIS. WHAT IS IT? WHAT WILL HAPPEN? PLZ HELP

Answer: Pulmonic Stenosis refers to the heart valve between the right ventricle and the pulmonary arteries. The right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs via the pulmonary arteries. This is how your blood get oxygen in it. Stenosis means a narrowing. It could be the valve itself or just above or below it. I'm assuming you are going to a pediatric cardiologist. They will do an echocardiogram on your baby (this doesn't hurt, its the same kind of thing you had when you were pregnant when they looked at the baby . . . ultrasound/sonogram) This will show how much stenosis or if its real at all. My son had the same thing done when he was 1. It turned out to be nothing, just a false alarm. If the echo shows that there is something wrong, its hard to say what will happen next. Sometimes they wait and see if it gets worse before they do anything. If they feel they need to open the valve more (stenosis means it doesn't open all the way) they can do that in the pediatric cardiac cath lab using a balloon, with good success. I think things will probably be okay. I know it's hard as we all worry about our babies, but try to stay positive.
