Tinea Corporis (Ringworm)
Tinea corporis is the name given to a fungus infection of the skin that is not one of the other ones listed here. It may be spread from person to person, from contact with an infected animal, most often a cat, or from exposure to fungus in the soil. Itchy red scaly patches come up anywhere the animal has rubbed. They often develop into a ring. This kind of tinea usually clears up with appropriate creams. If due to an animal, even if it has no signs of a skin problem it will need treatment too.

Question: how do you know you have tinea corporis? i made contact with someone who has been treating his ringworm for 4 weeks and in the same spot i touched him i got a red dot with a pimple-like bump at the top. i thought there was a red ring but its not there anymore and the red dot is losing its redness.
Answer: It could be dermatitis (skin infection) reaction to tinea corporis. If you touch someone with tinea corporis, then you could get that. It doesn't have to be shaped like a ring.

Go to your doctor.
Tinea infections are contagious and can be passed by direct contact with affected individuals or by contact with contaminated items such as combs, clothing, shower, or pool surfaces.
Symptoms of the tinea corporis:
* Itching of the affected area
* Skin lesion, rash
o On the arms, legs, face, trunk (usually exposed body areas)
o Ring shaped
o Reddened patch (abnormally dark or light skin)
o Borders advance and spread and the center clears
o Borders appear scaly, distinct
The diagnosis is primarily based on the appearance of the skin. If tests are used, they may include the following:
* A KOH (potassium hydroxide) test, in which skin scrapings are dissolved in KOH and then examined under a microscope. This test is painless and easy, and the results are available immediately.
* A skin lesion biopsy with microscopic examination or culture to look for dermatophytes.
