Question: How can I cure a horse with sporotrichosis?

Answer: Treatment for sporotrichosis usually involves the administration of at least one of several iodine-based products. Specialized iodine-based products may be administered intravenously, followed by oral medication. Topical hyperthermia in the form of hot packing is also helpful as adjunct therapy. Gloves should be worn at all times when handling horses that are suspected of having sporotrichosis. Sporotrichosis may be passed to humans, particularly if cuts or scrapes are present on the skin. A form of this disease in humans has been referred to as "rose grower’s nodules". Treatment should be continued for a minimum of one month beyond apparent cure. Many weeks, even months, of therapy may be required. Hence, a proper diagnosis should be obtained before embarking on any form of treatment. Early discontinuation of treatment results in a higher percentage of relapses
