Answer: Scabies is an infestation of the skin with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabei. Scabies spreads rapidly under crowded conditions where there is frequent skin-to-skin contact between people, such as in hospitals, institutions, child-care facilities, and nursing homes. You can get it by direct, prolonged, skin-to-skin contact with a person already infested with scabies. Contact must be prolonged (a quick handshake or hug will usually not spread infestation). Infestation is easily spread to sexual partners and household members. Infestation may also occur by sharing clothing, towels, and bedding.

Question: SCABIES?????????????????????!!!!!!!!!!... I am a total clean-freak... I drive my husband nuts about how much I clean. Well, to make a long story short, we just literally started our two preschoolers (ages 3 and 4) in daycare. Two weeks into it, our daughter comes home with small itchy red bumps on her "booty" and as days went by, it became much worse and even spread up her back and down her legs. We then took her in to see a doctor and he said that he thinks it may be scabies!!!!!! When the doctor explained what this was, I freaked!!!!! Our son, who attends the same daycare is fine and even sleeps right next to our daughter. The doctor gave us some cream to put on her and said that the cream should kill the scabies. My question is, how did she get this (daycare doesn't know) and why hasn't our son gotten this who sleeps right next to her and attends the same daycare?? It's been 2 weeks now and she is still itching a bloody bottom. Can this really be scabies??? Also, can you actually SEE Scabies if you look closely (like lice?) Thanks for any help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Answer: Scabies are not visible to the naked eye, though sometimes you can see the burrow track (which is very thin like a hair). Scabies is often misdiagnosed and it can be heat rash or eczema as they look similar. It does seem likely that your son could catch it in this setting but it also may take 2-6 weeks for symptoms to show. It sounds like the daycare is not reporting any other cases (though they may be afraid of losing customers). Also the rash can still continue for a few weeks after treatment so it isn't always easy to tell if it is just the residual effects, a different rash or a possible reinfestation. Meditator

There is a human race of scabies, which is transmitted from person to person. This human race of mange mite causes a rash on the wrists, elbows, or between the fingers. the best way to prevent getting scabies is: after handling your dog wipe your hands off with benzoyl peroxide this will kill the mite. keep you pet away from other pets also they can cmontact this mite also.

Question: What is the probability of catching scabies in this situation? If you have a roommate that has scabies, what are the chances of getting scabies if your towels are touching eachother in the bathroom, or hamper, etc...? How easy is it to get scabies without having sex??

Answer: You can absolutely get scabies without sex. If your towels, clothing or bedsheets are in close contact, it can be passed. Scabies is amazingly contagious! If your room mate has them and is getting treated, YOU SHOULD TOO! Otherwise, you likely will get them and just pass them back to him. Unfortunately, you won't know for about 2-4 weeks after you get them that you have them, since the itching doesn't start until the first eggs hatch. Treat yourself! Scabies suck!

Question: Is scabies Contagious from a dog to a cat? My dog has Scabies, he has been trated for it, but nothing worked. I'm planning to take my cat to my mom's home, but I don't know If the scabies my dog has, is contagious to cats?

Answer: YES! scabies cross almost all animal lines (mammals). that includes humans. please recheck with your vet if what you are using isn't working! if the cat isn't showing any signs, it's ok to move. just keep an eye on the cat. you don't have to burn your clothes. it is passed by close skin to skin contact.(or VERY unsanitary conditions) do clean all of the dog's items and any place he sleeps. check with your vet to see if you can safely put frontline on the dog(cat too) to kill the mites(scabies).

Question: When dogs have scabies and are treated, does the hair that was lost grow back? I am planning on adopting a dog. He is getting treated for scabies. He has lots of hairless spots due to the infestation. He will be treated for three more weeks. Will the hair grow back or will there be bare spots for good?

Answer: It will grow back, it will take a lot of time once the treatment is over. Good for you adopting a dog, especially one that really needs a home!

Question: Do natural remedies for scabies really work? I have scabies still after 3 treatements of premethrin 5%. I read on the internet where it is really hard to get rid of scabies and that the prescription meds usually do not work. Would it be a waste of time and money to try one of the natural remedies I see advertised. Also, what can I spray on my mattress and furniture that will kill the scabies? Please help, I'm going bananas over this!

Answer: the medication should have worked if you did it properly. go back to your doctor and tell them it isn't working.

Question: How long is scabies contagious after treatment? I was diagnosed with scabies a few weeks ago. I have a 4 month old baby sister and I don't want her to get it. So if i'v had it for maybe a month could she get it. So really my question is how long is scabies contagious after treatment. Thanks for th great answers!

Answer: My younger sister just had this, she doesnt live with me, but the doctor informed her that MOST cases of scabies are no longer contagious after 24 hours of treatment...so as long as you are being treated for it...your defintily probably not contagious anymore/
