Question: folliculitis? I think I have folliculitis. I have an appointment with a dermatologist tomorrow. What can I expect? Is there a cure? Would this cause my hair to be more greasy and fall out?
cj.born-on my scalp
Answer: Don't know if there's a cure, but they can give you a topical for it and will probably advise you to keep it as oil-free as possible.
Question: What underwear is best for reducing the risk of folliculitis? What type of underwear is best for reducing the risk of folliculitis? As it's getting warmer, things tend to.. chafe down there and I was wondering what type is most suitable to avoid this.
Thanks for the responses. How about cut? Are boxers, briefs or boxer-briefs best?
Answer: Cotton boxers or boxer briefs. Just be sure they are cotton.
Question: Does anyone have a home remedy for folliculitis? I have folliculitis on my arms, stomach and breasts and I would like to get rid of them naturally. I was on an antibiotic but my doctor doesn't want me to take another round. I am also a type 2 diabetic. So I am prone to getting this hideous skin condition. I just want to get rid of this without going on expensive medicine as I am on a limited income.
Answer: You need to see a specialized dermatologist. They will be able to help you more than your regular physician.
Question: How to prevent/treat folliculitis of the face/neck? I have taken every measure I can think of to prevent folliculitis/razor burn. I even use an electric shaver, as blade shaving is completely out of the question. Right now my derm has me using retin A which is helping a little bit. Do any guys who have ever had this have any suggestions. All are welcome, however, as said I do use an electric shaver, so any suggestions for blade shaving don't really apply here. Thank you all.
Answer: Folliculitis is a bacterial infection. Ask your derm about anti-bacterial soaps that you can use on your face. There are prescription soaps and skin treatment that you can only get from your doctor. The other option is antibiotics if the rash is really bad.
Question: how painful is folliculitis supposed to be? I have about 4 large lumps on my shin which are swollen and red and are almost running into each other. They are warm to the touch and when my jeans rub against them they hurt. I dont have "pimple" like bumps or any pus coming out of them. Is it possible for my doctor to have mistaken edythema nodosum for folliculitis?
Answer: Yes it's possible. Sounds more like shingles though. ^^
Question: I have folliculitis on my scalp and I'm embarrased to get my hair cut? This is really embarrasing for me to talk about. I have folliculitis--which is infected hair foliciles, mine happen to be on my scalp(looks like scabs). I REALLY want to get my hair cut but I am so embarrased to go. Last time I went the lady said something and I havent had my haircut for since then(1 year ago). Does anyone else have this problem?
Answer: its not something to worry about when you go to get your hair cut just let the hairdresser know, if shes any good she wont care. i have been a hairdresser for 10 years and i see alot and it doesnt bother me
Question: Can you contract folliculitis by having sex? I slept with a girl around 6 weeks ago and used protection, i noticed she had spots around her genital area but thought nothing of it. I ended up getting spots around my genital area while none actually on the penis or testcles. I looked at pictures on the net and it looks to be folliculitis. Im just wondering can you actually contract folliculitis from sleeping with some one or could it be something more serious?
Answer: Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicle, and is not sexually transmitted. It occurs most often when you shave the area but irritate the hair follicle.
EDIT:OK i admit I didn't read the whole question before answering the first time. It could be herpes or genital warts, or a rash of some kind. Seek guidance from your doctor.
Question: Does anyone know how to prevent ingrown hairs/folliculitis? No matter what I do when I shave I get ingrown hairs(mainly what looks like folliculitis) Please no responses on shaving with blades b/c I use an electric. Blade shaving is completly out of the question. An electric is the closest I can come to looking somewhat decent, but would like to figure out how or what to use to eliminate the folliculitis. Thanks.
Answer: Don't pull the skin taut when you shave, and do it in the direction that your hair is growing.
Also do it in the shower after you have let the hot water soften up your hairs a bit. You can also use products with salicylic acid and exfoliate regularly.
To really eradicate ingrown hair go for laser hair removal. One or two visits are sufficient, and while it is not enough to permanently remove the hair (you'd need about 6-8 visits and it's expensive), it will prevent folliculitis from developing in future.
Question: How can I get rid of folliculitis? I'm a 20 year old black male and ever since I was 17 years old I started developing serious folliculitis everytime I come from the barber shop after getting a lineup and shave. It usually develops on my neck after a week and a half to two weeks of coming from the barber no matter what is used whether its the barber shaving clippers or a razor it happens the same way all the time. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
Answer: Yes, have your barber sanitize the clipper before he you are edged up. I do think your sensitivity will go away soon though.
Question: How do I live with my family if I have a folliculitis/staph infection.? Antibiotics have worked on the staph, but the folliculitis on my scalp keeps coming back especially after I get haircuts (i'm in the military so I have to get skin fades). I don't want to infect my family. I keep myself clean. I don't want to wash my clothes in the washer anymore because I don't want to spread the infection, I don't even like to take showers in our bathroom. I usually go to the gym everyday and shower there.
Please Help!
Answer: Have you asked a dermatologist for advice? Folliculitis is an inflammation of a hair follicle probably due to irritation or bacterial, and not necessarily highly contagious. Staph is another matter...
Don't share towels, hairbrushes, bars of soap, utensils, or other personal care items. It's ok to wash your clothes in hot water. Bleach will kill any contaminants in a shower/tub. Wash your hands in warm soapy water frequently. You don't need to shower elsewhere. You'll be fine, and so will your family, but it always helps to get professional advice.
