Question: How long after consuming gluten does dermatitis herpetiformis appear? Okay... so after a gluten sensitive person consumes gluten, does dermatitis herpetiformis appear on the skin, an hour later, a day, a week... how long?
Answer: There isn't a definitive answer. It depends on how sensitive you are. Also not all gluten sensitive people develop DH.
Here is a quote from Dr Green's book, Celiac Disease- A Hidden Epidemic.
"There is a definite spectrum of sensitivity to gluten in those with DH, and some people are exquisitely sensitve to even trace amounts. The occurrence of lesions after an ingestion of gluten (anywhere for several hours to several days) is another indication of this condition."
Question: Does dermatitis herpetiformis from Celiac Disease resemble psoriasis? Okay... is dermatitis herpetiformis scaly, red, and in some areas look like really dry flaky skin? (and when you put on cream it seems to come back/not completely go away)? Does it look anything like psoriasis? Does it resemble eczema?
Answer: well in psoriasis the scales are white silver in color and when u remove it u find a raw surface with multiple bleeding points ,you can find that here in this site about psoriasis http://psoriasisdestroyer.blogspot.com/
Question: How long after eating gluten does a rash occur when you have Dermatitis Herpetiformis (Celiac of the Skin)?
Looking more for information as to how long after eating gluten before rash appears - I assume it's not as quick as the gi issues but not sure. I don't eat gluten - but have had restaurant mishap.
Answer: It varies from person to person. I haven't had an outbreak of dermatitis Herpetiformis or of alopecia in years, despite breaking the gluten-free diet on several occasions. I used to get both of those within days of eating gluten. My father, who also has the disease, has never had either.
Question: I have been having a flare up of mild Dermatitis Herpetiformis. I have celiac disease (dig. 6 months ago)? I just wondered if this could be linked to my thyroid. I feel very tired and my hair has started to fall out. The rash is on my neck and face. I have been on a GF diet, but I wonder if I keep getting some gluten from an unknown source?
I would love some imput. I am going to go to the Dr. next week to have him check my thyroid.
Answer: Having an autoimmune disorder like celiac is an indicator of a thyroid condition.
The problem with thyroid tests is that they don't really work on an individual basis. My mom-in-law's thyroid test fell right in the middle of "normal" but her doc put her on mild thyroid meds to see what would happen. She reports that she feels like she's going through a personal renaissance.
As far as gluten in your diet that might be "hiding" check out the book "The Gluten Free Bible"-- it's really thorough on places gluten could show up without you even thinking about it. For example... modified food starch if GF if the product is made in the US, but may not be if it's imported. UGH!! My christmas wish is for better food labels.
Question: What is dermatitis herpetiformis?
Answer: Dermatitis herpetiformis (DH) or Duhring's Disease, is a skin disorder often associated with celiac disease. It is a chronic, extremely itchy rash consisting of papules and vesicles. Dermatitis herpetiformis is associated with sensitivity of the intestine to gluten in the diet (celiac sprue).
Question: i have Dermatitis herpetiformis is there anything that i can eat anymore i am also lactose intolerant?
what happens to my body when i eat wheat barley oats and rye and dairy? Like i know on the physical i just use the washroom but what happens inside and other than rice what can i eat?
Answer: This is a question for a dietitian, I think. Do you have a dietitian in your area? If so, give them a call. If not, I think a doctor or a naturopath would be good sources of information. I hope you'll be feeling better soon.
Question: I have Dermatitis Herpetiformis?! Gluten? I just found out that I have this "disease". What should I do to treat it? What do I need to do to prevent it from happening?
Answer: This is caused by gluten intolerance. You'll have to follow a strict gluten-free diet, which means no wheat. You may also be intolerant to other grain products which contain gluten. My best advice would be to google "celiac disease" which is also caused by gluten intolerance - your diet should be identical to someone with celiac disease. Also google gluten-free food products.
Best of luck! There are so many more gluten free products out there now, you'll do OK - rice pasta, rice crackers, corn tortillas, gluten free waffles and other products. So many are good!
Edit: took out my reference to the deleted question :-)
Question: Alternative Medicine for Celiac Disease? My best friend is pretty sure that she has celiac disease, and she is afraid of taking the medicines for it because of the more serious down falls of the meds. She also has the skin rash Dermatitis Herpetiformis and she doesn't know what to do for either.
Does anyone have any good holistic medicine recommendations her?
Answer: Celiac Disease Alternative Medicine
Celiac.com 02/12/2007 - Before they are diagnosed, people with celiac disease often find themselves in an unenviable position. They may go out of their way to eat a wholesome, balanced diet including plenty of fruits and vegetables, a good variety of whole-grain foods, and a modest amount of meat and dairy, yet still find themselves suffering a whole range of bothersome stomach and digestive complaints including indigestion, gas, stomach cramps and diarrhea, alternating with constipation.

Question: Celiac...can you still have CD or HD if the endoscopy biopsy is negative? My husband's endoscopy seems to be negative for celiac. ("Seems" because the doctor can't communicate.)
Could he still have CD or herpetiformis dermatitis if the biopsy of the small intestine comes back negative? He hasn't had a blood test. If he couldn't possibly have CD or HD, then I'll let it go.
Answer: He HAS TO HAVE the blood test. Have him go wheat free and see if he feels any better. Try having him go lactose free, and whatever you do... DON'T always listen to the crap the test may say. My mom and little brother (who also has autism) have celiac. Mom got tested 6 times for everything until they finally discovered it. The gluten free bread is expensive. It helps to go vegitarian for a bit. Kinickinic is a good brand of gluten free bread products, so try that. If he feels better, the blood test was a false -. Go to health food stores, cut back on dairy too. Lactose intolerance is sometimes part of the package. Is he skinny? REALLY Skinny? Is he trying to be? If he isn't trying but he is, (my mom had this and so did some students of hers) he may very well have it.
Don't eat malt, or barley. Don't cross contaminate. Careful! Nacho cheese doritos 4 instance have wheat. Always read labels and if it helps you, don't eat out too much. No twizzlers. if it says malt, pitch it. Buy some gluten free cook-books. It's hard cooking different, mom and dad know.
hope I helped.
