Question: do clubbed nails disfigure the finger or toe ? I can't figure out what exactly a clubbed nail is or looks like.
From the photos I can find, it looks like the nail is almost glued down and wrapping around the finger. It looks like the finger (or toe?) has swollen up.
I read that for clubbed fingernails the fingers resembles a drumstick.
This doesn't make any sense to me.
Do the nails get distorted which then pulls the shape of the finger and leaves it difigured? Or is clubbing more subtle ?
Answer: Digital clubbing is an anatomical change. They think starts in the nail bed, but it is one of those things that everyone knows it when they see it, have a good general idea what it means when they see it, but have no real explanation for why it happens. It is usually a symptom of : Inflammatory bowel disease, pulmonary malignancy, asbestosis, chronic bronchitis, COPD, cirrhosis, congenital heart disease, endocarditis, atrioventricular malformations, fistulas, cystic fibrosis, Crohn's disease, etc.
The strange thing is that it can be just one digit, or the whole hand. I seem to remember thinking that the nail was a bit looser on people with digital clubbing, but it has been a while since I have seen anyone with it since I am no longer working with adults. (though you can see these with children).

Answer: Congenital clubbing of finger nails, normally put as a short case in Membership examination, good question.

Question: Are my sons consultants right that he has cystic fibrosis? We are seeing my sons consultants tommorow. For years we were told he had asthma. However it seems this was probably wrong. He has frequent chest infections but had pneumonia recently. This is when the alarm bells started ringing cause the consultant noticed he has clubbed nails on fingers and toes. His aray of symptoms also include stomach problems early on, still has reflux, persistent cough and salty skin. Putting all the pieces together I think cf is likely but i'm terrified. He's 6 so gone this long with the wrong diagnosis. Is his future bleak or can I be optimistic, can anyone shed any light?
Answer: It's going to be okay. Think about it this way- if he has gone for 6 years without a diagnosis, it's probably not horribly serious. With today's medications and advances, CF kids can live a lot longer. I was diagnosed when I was 2. I live a normal life with very little complications. If you have any questions, feel free to email me, mariahc_1@yahoo.com. Your consultants will also be able to answer lots of questions. You can contact your state's chapter of CFF for local support information. Your child will need a sweat test, which will confirm the diagnosis. Again, it will be okay. There are so many new advances in CF's treatment.
Question: Could I really stay happy with a NUTJOB (that I happen to love??) My boyfriend is way great, however he is schizo-effective. He gets a disability check from the government once a month cuz he is legally insane. I fell for him cuz he can often be funny, adorable, strong and good in bed (!) sexy and fairly "normal". However he has a history of rage and drug problems. He is extremely impulsive. Not too long ago I was woken up in the middle of the night by the sounds of hammering and sawing in the garage. He was making these crazy, midevil torture devices, like clubs with nails sticking out of them. (paranoid?) He also left twice in the past week late at night with his thug friends, even tho I told him no, and both times he could've easily wound up arrested or dead. Also, he won't take his meds unless his mom physically gives them to him in a little cup. He wants to move in with me, but I told him I'm not taking the place of his mama! I love him to pieces, but it's tough, also with the money sitch cuz I'm the only one working right now.
What to dooo
Answer: Its very strange what we'll do for love. I mean in most cases like this, the person involved would run a mile! I dunno, you'll have to decide pretty soon if you think its worth the hassle in the long run. I mean, whats the point in wasting perhaps a few precious years of your life being with a man like this who might never change? And whats with all the medievel torture stuff?! You'd wanna be careful he doesn't end up using it on you! I think if I was in your situation, I'd have to carefully consider where this is going. Are you gonna have to support him years to come? Or will he eventually get a job instead of relying on you to support him? Does his mental problems mean that he will never be capable of holding down a job? If so, you're stuck in this situation for life. Is it worth it?
Question: anyone see the trouble , about half 8 , at the white horse pub after the Chelsea , spurs match? my brother who was passing said it looked like a lot of spurs fans were badly hurt ? whats going on , taking things a bit far when , knives , hockey sticks , clubs (with nails ) are used? going back to the 80,s. does this happen often in london and just dose,nt hit the tabloids ?

Question: Should I be worried re: my teens clubbing of her toenails? She's 15. Fingernails are ok. Bad Headaches too. She was born with a heart murmor. Told at age 6 months it was fine. Brother did have a large ASD and had surgery at age 3 to repair the hole in his heart.
She has a history of stomach issues - nothing serious, but what my grandmother would have termed a 'nervous stomach'.
She now has severe headaches daily. Pain her her neck daily.
Recently was severely dehydrated (in the winter - Dec 9th).Just woke up one day with with severe nausea, fever, vomitting and SEVERE headache, high WBC count. Required IV fluids. Fine the following day.
But continues with daily headaches and neck pain.
And I JUST noticed yetserday that her toenails are 'clubbed' (the nail curves around the end of the toe, because the toe is really large and fleshy). All her toes appear this way. Her fingernails appear fine.
I knew that clubbing of the fingernails can be a clinical sign of an underlying disease, but what about toenails?
I do not know if I am being silly to worry or if I should take her to the doc?
Answer: Yes clubbing of the toenails is also a sign. I am a nursing student and that is one of the signs we recently had to watch for. Generally it results from a heart condition or circulatory issue. The extremities usually show the first signs of circulation issues. I would get her checked ASAP especially since she is having neck pain. The neck, back and arms are location of referred pain and can indicate something else is going on.
Question: So we're in love, but is it possible to happy with a total NUTJOB in the long run? My boyfriend is way great, however he is schizo-effective. I love him to pieces, but it's tough, also with the money sitch cuz I'm the only one working right now.
What to dooo
- I meant that HE seemed to be paranoid, making weapons in the middle of the night and all...
- I keep having these dreams that he's getting hurt or locked up... he just got out of a 2 month stint in jail 1.5 mths ago
- My parents have disowned me almost; I was raised in upper middle class, white-collar working parents, having everything i ever wanted, and they see this as a huge setback. I know I sound crazy.. but I love this guy =(
- I myself am bi-polar, but i manage it with daily meds and weekly therapy
- I myself am bi-polar, but i manage it with daily meds and weekly therapy
Answer: The problem isn't that he's schizo-affective, and the people saying that it is are a bunch of ignorant pricks.
The problem is that he won't take his meds or take care of himself. There is the REAL issue. Know that he can - my best friend is schizo-affective and he takes care of himself. He's still crazy, make no mistake! But he's under control of himself and he leads a pretty happy life.
I myself am bipolar, and I know that being in a relationship with me can be a challenge. But it's all about how much you're willing to work.
If he isn't willing to work, drop him. But understand that it has nothing to do with him being mentally disordered. There are plenty of "sane" people who are unwilling to work in relationships.
Question: What distance do you lay up to and what club do you use for that distance? I've been staying away from going for the green at 200+ yards as usually I am short or left or right and rarely on. Fringe and a short chip if I'm lucky, but usually ranges between 10-30 yard pitch which is a distance not even the pros like to play. They usually lay up to 'their distance' and use the perfect club to nail the ball pin high for a short put to save par or birdie.
I like to lay up to 90 yards and use my 50* Cobra Carbon CB Gap Wedge. This is my 105 yard club but a nice easy swing I'm deadly with and can nail it within 6 feet of the hole for, hopefully, a one-putt. My friends are calling my the One-Putt-King... LOL
And most of them aren't laying up to 'their distance' and struggling with tough chips and short pitches over trouble when they could have layed up and nailed a one or two putt. At worst its a bogey right?
So what's your distance and your club?
Answer: if i like to leave a 75 metre shot or 82 yards. this leaves a perfect '9 o'clock' sand wedge which is my most consistant shot. i will only lay up on par 5s or if i'm in the trees or a bunkers and unable to go 4 the green. but if you feel you have a better chance at shooting a good score playing that way its a good idea.
