Answer: First of all, I'm not sure why the patient had a mastectomy due to Paget's. Paget's is a disease of the bone. Plus, to correct the other person that answered, It is quite possible to function w/a TSH level of that nature, however it should be addressed by an endocrinologist. Synthroid or another levothyroxine replacement will likely be prescribed. This person should consult his/her physician, especially if they are symptomatic. Being hypo is definitely no fun.

Answer: When an area of bone is destroyed in a person with Paget’s disease, the bone that replaces it is soft and porous. Soft bone can be weak and easily bend, leading to shortening of the affected part of the body. This can effect your bones in two ways. 1 - Shortening and bending will put additional pressure on the spinal cord effecting the pressure on the nerves. 2 - When the bone repairs itself it causes the bone to become larger, also creating more pressure on the spinal cord.

Answer: Yes. Paget's disease is cancerous in all cases and Mastectomy is the treatment suggested. Paget's disease of the breast usually requires surgery. Which type of surgery you need depends on the condition of the skin around your nipple and how advanced the underlying cancer is. Surgical options include: Simple mastectomy. This procedure involves removing your breast, but not the lymph nodes in your armpit (axillary lymph nodes). Simple mastectomy is recommended in cases in which an underlying breast cancer exists but it isn't invasive breast cancer and it hasn't spread to the lymph nodes. Skin-sparing mastectomy. In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision around your nipple and areola, removes all of the underlying breast tissue, but preserves the overlying skin. Breast reconstruction with breast implants or with your body's own tissue (autologous reconstruction) is usually performed during the same surgery. Skin-sparing mastectomy isn't an option if the skin changes associated with Paget's disease have spread beyond your areola. Modified radical mastectomy. A modified radical mastectomy is generally recommended if you have invasive breast cancer or extensive in situ breast cancer with spread to the lymph nodes in your armpit. In this procedure, the surgeon removes the breast, the lining of the chest wall muscle and some of your underarm (axillary) lymph nodes. The lymph nodes are checked for signs that the cancer has spread (metastasized). Lumpectomy. Lumpectomy is a breast-conserving procedure in which the surgeon removes only the diseased portion of your breast. This procedure is generally considered if you have Paget's disease of the breast but no other evidence of underlying breast cancer. Your surgeon makes an incision around your areola, removing it and your nipple along with a wedge- or cone-shaped section of your breast. The surgeon focuses on removing as little breast tissue as possible, while ensuring that the tissue removed includes an outer margin of normal cells so that only healthy cells remain. Lumpectomy to treat Paget's disease of the breast almost always requires follow-up radiation therapy as adjuvant treatment. Lumpectomy wouldn't be recommended if you can't have radiation therapy for some reason. Nipple reconstruction may be an option after your treatment.-

Question: Is it true that Paget disease starts as eczema in the breast? After a biopsy and mammogram I have been diagnosed with eczema in the areola of my left breast. But the rough, itchy patch in my areola does not go away althugh it has soften since I am putting steroid adn moisturiser cream. I have been told that if the patch does not go away is because it may develop into Paget's disease later. Also the Paget disease does not show in the mammogram in the first stages. Am I condemned with cancer of the breast? thank you

Answer: If it is truly eczema, it won't develop into anything else. However, if you have the symptoms of eczema on the nipple and they do not go away, then you may have Paget's. One does NOT convert to another; rather Paget's RESEMBLES eczema in it's earliest stages. DO see a doctor who specializes in breast diseases, and DO NOT DELAY. Question: The doctor said I had beginning stage of Paget's disease,what causes it and and can it be severe?

Answer: Paget's disease affects the bones. It goes by another name, osteitis. This name implies that it is an infection of the bone. Since it affects members of a family, about 30%, it also implies that there is possibly a genetic link. If genes are involved, there is usually a trigger that will turn a gene on to cause the problem. Sometimes deficiencies can trigger a gene. Other genes simply turn on and off with bodily events. The famous onca genes that were discovered to turn on at 3 stages of life and then turn off and never turn on again causing growth spurts is a good example of this type of gene. The onca genes were also discovered to turn on in cancer cells causing rapid growth. The medical community claims they do not know what causes the disease or how to prevent it from happening or progressing. They simply treat the symptoms to make you feel better with drugs. Without claiming any knowledge of the disease in regard to understanding what causes it or how to prevent it or stop the progression, I would attack the problem by beefing up my immune system, attack biofilm production, and add many herbs to my diet that goes after viruses and bacteria to try and get my body stronger. Question: Would the eczema-like spots of Paget's disease of the breast show up in areas other than the nipple?

Answer: Yes, and when it does, it's called "extra-mammary Paget's". The common place for this to occur is in the perineal area, around the anal area.

Question: Eczema? Nipple Rash? Paget's DISEASE????? HELP PANIC!? Okay I'm really worried because I've had a nipple rash on my right nipple for a while and I am really, really worried about it cause I finally worked up the guts to google it and it sounds like Paget's disease but that can't happen! I'm only thirteen and it says Paget's Disease happens to women between 63-66. And it's nowhere near as scary looking as the advanced ones even though I think I've had it for over a year. I'm like, panicking right now. Oh yes and I have always had eczema, on my inner elbows, inner knees, eyebrows. nothing stupid like 'thats gross' because i know... and it's really not helpful when i'm seriously considering the fact that i might have brreast cancer and might die before i turn 20. Answer: Go to the DOCTOR! Tell your parents that you need to see a Dr. and try to see a female if you can. Since you are only 13 it's probably NOT serious, but whenever you have an unexplained rash, you should go to the doctor! Good luck!
