Question: Help, How to deal with Dependent personality disorder?
Im 19 years old but I think I might have Dependent personality disorder. My fear of being lonely drives me to do please everyone. I go out my way for people, friends and so forth so they could like me. I don't rock the boat because of the fear of being rejected. Im pretty much a "YES" man and that often has gotten me taken advantage of by friends. I need reassurance from friends and peers for me to feel confident and I base my self-worth on what others think and the friends that I have. Its almost as if I am scared to stand alone because I dont think I have what it takes to. Is there anyone like this and is this something that guys go through? If so what can I do because I might very well have to stand alone this school year in college after several friends turned on me?
Answer: How did you come about this diagnosis? All those issues could qualify you in several other labels. If you feel a desire to change it takes hard work but it is worth it. A few sentences with instructions is not going to do much. I recommend going to a qualified professional, or group therapy and getting evaluated, educated with guiding assistance. I personally look at life as a journey where we are given opportunities to learn about ourselves. Sometimes I am not willing to grow until things become so painful I have to! I think it's great that you are examining yourself . Some times we don't have enough knowledge to help ourselves and sometimes we need support because it is difficult and takes awhile. It is up to me to get the help I need by finding and using my resources. I wish you growth and good luck in college! P.S. Counseling changed my life and the way I look at things.
Question: What is a good book on dependent personality disorder? Not codependent? I have found a few websites, but nothing but sypmtoms and limited treatments. Most is on borderline personality or codependency.
Answer: "Emotional Vampires" is one I've heard a lot about, but I haven't had the chance to read it myself. It's geared more toward people who interact with others who have personality disorders. I've heard it's not filled with tons of jargon which makes it an easy read for everyone and it also encompasses all personality disorders.
Sorry I couldn't be more help. There just doesn't seem to be a lot out there on dependent personalities.

If we connect with our partners on intellectual and emotional levels, are confident, value our autonomy/ respect our partner's, do not suppress our sexuality/ do not expect our partner to, and have more than one potential sexual partner, what reason is there to be monogamous? Is it healthy to suppress our desires?
Why is it assumed that we can only love one person at a time?

Question: What is a dependent personality disorder? And also how is it treated?
Answer: Dependent personality disorder "is a personality disorder that is characterized by a pervasive psychological dependence on other people."
someone with the disorder:
Has difficulty making everyday decisions without an excessive amount of advice and reassurance from others
Needs others to assume responsibility for most major areas of his or her life
Has difficulty expressing disagreement with others because of fear of loss of support or approval (this does not include realistic fears of retribution)
Has difficulty initiating projects or doing things on his or her own (because of a lack of self-confidence in judgment or abilities rather than a lack of motivation or energy)
Goes to excessive lengths to obtain nurturance and support from others, to the point of volunteering to do things that are unpleasant
Feels uncomfortable or helpless when alone because of exaggerated fears of being unable to care for himself or herself
Urgently seeks another relationship as a source of care and support when a close relationship ends
Is unrealistically preoccupied with fears of being left to take care of himself or herself
---
It is treated with use of psychotherapy and antidepressants/ anti anxiety medications.
Question: Can someone who has Dependent Personality Disorder be a good leader?
Answer: It depends on the kind of leadership position you're talking about. But normally a leader needs to be mentally tough, confident, inspirational and capable of working without supervision. A person with a dependency disorder might find this very difficult. It would depend on what other strong personal qualities this individual has.
Question: do I have dependent personality disorder? I am a successfull young man but sometimes I feel dependent on my girlfriend to take care of me. I fear that if my girlfriend leaves me I will not be able to survive. I can become very clingy to my girlfriend, which she sometimes thinks is cute, but it sometimes gets to be too clingy for her. What does everyone think?
Answer: There are so many factors that make each one of us unique, upbringing, life experience and just plain ol' personalities. There is nothing wrong with you, you don't have to name it something, it is just how you are. Some people are sensitive and need what you call clinginess while others may be more independant and private. The goal is to find someone who loves you unconditionally and whose personality meshes with yours. Otherwise, you will always be trying to be someone you're not or trying to change the other person, Just be yourself and love who you are. God Bless YOu.

Question: i have Dependent personality disorder and i have seen hypnosis tape that deals with co dependency, my question is what is the diffrence between co dependency and Dependent personality disorder and do you think that the hypnosis tape co dependency will releif some of the traits of Dependent personality disorder. also does anyone know of any hypnosis tape that will help me with Dependent personality disorder
Answer: I am not a Mental Health professional, but I am a Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist with over 10 years of experience. If you have been officially diagnosed by a Mental Health professional as having Dependent Personality Disorder, hypnosis can be a useful additional resource to whatever treatment has been recommended to you.
I would strongly recommend you find a local hypnotherapist for private session work, if at all possible. While hypnosis tapes can certainly be helpful, I feel they are better used as reinforcement for the powerful shifts that can occur from an individualized session. I would be happy to help you locate a hypnotherapist in your area. . .

Answer: That is a co-dependent personality. It is hard to explain. When women stay with an abuser or alcoholic and wont leave they are co-dependent. They don't want to leave as they think that person will change and they need her help. I am co dependent as I am used to letting my husband make all important decisions.I need that. I hope this helps you. Look on Internet,Google personalities and you can read allot about this.Good luck.
Question: Is this one of the symptoms of Dependent Personality Disorder? Being easily influenced by others' opinions.
Answer: Dependent Personality Disorder is manifested via passively allowing others to assume responsibility for major areas of ones life due to lack of self-confidence or lack of ability to function independently. This leads to the person making their own needs secondary to the needs of others, and then becoming dependent on them. While everyone is dependent on others for some parts of their lives, those with dependent personality disorder are dependent on almost all major areas of their lives, and view themselves poorly, and good only as extensions of others.
