I wake up at 4 every morning and its hard to fall asleep after that. I am a very athletic and active and have suffered with depression for about 4 years. Ive been getting headaches and been taking excedrin migrane. Any home remedies for sleep?
Answer: First lay off the excedrin migrane. Excedrin has caffeine in which will keep you awake.
You say you suffer from depression. You may need to see a psychiatrist and get put on a medication like remeron. It will help with your depression, plus one of its major side effects is it makes you sleep.

Question: What is a good remedy for sleeplessness? I am an 18 yr old female, I have a healthy diet and get regular exercise. I'm at University and have been now for 3 months, I don't feel stressed, depressed or homesick. But I can't sleep, i lie awake for hours; it is getting very annoying. Has anyone got any ideas or remedies?
Thanks in advance!
Answer: A warm bath is a great way to relax to help you fall asleep. If you can’t take a bath, you can give yourself a foot massage with slightly warm massage oil, sesame oil, or castor oil from a health food store.
What was very helpful to me, especially when my mind was racing, was to lie in bed and listen to relaxation CDs, especially those that contain someone speaking with relaxing music in the background. Many of these CDs are available on eBay for very low prices.
A helpful technique is to relax your body one part at a time. So you could relax your feet, your lower legs, upper legs, moving up from your lower belly up to your chest, etc., etc.
Of course, guided relaxation methods can help, imagining yourself in the country, the beach, or whatever is most soothing to you.
If you have annoying thoughts or personal issues that run thru your mind when you are trying to sleep, you might have to deal with those issues first. You might want to talk to a counselor or therapist about that. I suggest avoiding prescription sleeping pills unless nothing else helps.
There are herbs that are helpful for sleep, eg, valerian root, kava kava, chamomile, hops, passion flower, skullcap. If you get the real herbs, you can make teas out of them. Otherwise get the herbs in capsule form. Probably, valerian root and kava kava are the best.
You can also try trytophan, 5-HTP and melatonin (1-2 mg). I would not take melatonin for over a month. It is a hormone produced by the pineal gland. If you take too much, your pineal gland might get "lazy" and produce less melatonin naturally. Life Extension and TwinLabs are probably the best brands, in that order.
Question: Anyone have any good sleeplessness cures during early pregnancy? I haven't slept good for several nights and was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions. I believe Unisom and Tylenol PM are safe. Anyone know for sure? By the way, I am 6 weeks.
Answer: Yes they are safe. So is the prescription Ambien. The Unisom and benadryl in the Tylenol PM is actually used as an anti-nausea treatment in the early stages.

Question: Is it common to experience sleeplessness following cardiac by-pass surgery? My husband is 1 1/2 weeks post-op and is awake most of the night, sleeping a lot during the day.
Answer: Yes. One of the common medications is called a beta blocker and this makes you very tired. Get him to discuss with his Dr taking the medication at night instead of in the morning. He is still recuperating don't forget and that takes energy.
Question: What should I do about my sleeplessness? I feel very sleepy, but the moment I lie down and close my eyes, I am wide awake. It's as if a brightness is in front of my eyes.
Answer: Oh I feel your pain, this is the reason I'm awake right now. My problem is I keep thinking about stuff that's making me upset and I can't just lay in bed...
Try guided imagery to relax! It's a yoga technique that usually works for me that consists of deep nasal breathing and relaxing different parts of your body at different times while imagining yourself sinking into sand, or mud, or whatever you want!
Question: How to combat sleeplessness next day? How to combat sleeplessness next day esp when you have a hectic and important work schedule next day, where you cannot afford to skip that ?
Any diet or exercises for sleepy and burning eyes due to slepplessness?
Whats an ADD pill
Answer: ADD medication have a look on the NIMH, don't touch them unless you need them as they have speed in them and are a controlled substance. If you have ADD/ADHD then the meds work in the opposite way and work fine but for the everyday person they are a no no.
Question: does the tiredness feeling go away, the sleeplessness go away after starting Prozac? just curious. been on it a week. up and down all night and then I get up early and go back to sleep and can't get going until noon.
The weird thoughts as mentioned in #2 were there already, and are improving, going away, though there are days! Therapist knows, boyfriend knows. Was on Lexapro and Citalopram before this and ooh.. Talk about crazy hallucinations, dreams and constant suicidal thoughts.
Answer: It usually takes 2-4 weeks for an antidepressant to build up in your system and for you to acclimate to the side effects. Some side effects will go away, others come with the drug. Every person is different. Work with your doctor to decide the best drug(s) and dosage for you but try to give it a month or so to see how it's working.
One exception, if you are having weird thoughts of suicide or harming yourself, tell a trusted friend and your doctor IMMEDIATELY! That is a side effect you can't play with.
Question: Does anyone have a good remedy for sleeplessness? If I can get to sleep I can't stay asleep! My Dr. prescribed a sleep aid but it only worked for a short period. Any simple suggestions?
Answer: How much do you do in a day? I found when I was walking 3 or 4 miles a day I was asleep before I got to the bed. Do enough in a day to make yourself truely tired out! And don't have any caffine after 12:00 (noon). Remember even chocolate has caffine in it, so beware of what you put in your mouth!
