Question: Essential Tremor? I'm a teenage student. I have been wondering whether this is essential tremor or not. Mine is something like a situational one.. i mean, an unfamiliar situation. Suppose, when I join a new group of friends and when I do something, my hands shake. But, after a few weeks, when I get used to those guys, my hands don't shake when I do normal things around them. When I'm alone, there is no shaking of hands. But the thing is I'm not alone always... there are so many places where my hands keep on shaking. Because of this problem, I'm scared to get on a stage or go in front of the class etc. The chemistry lab is a fine terrible example... I can't hold anything without shaking, its a terrible life like this. Everyone notices it also. It also happens in some examinations, not all, if the paper is either very easy (easy to score above 98%) or very tough (that i'll fail), then my hands start shaking. If the paper is moderate, then no shaking! Is there anyway to get rid of dis strange problem.

Answer: You can be sure that it's not essential tremors :) First of all let me explain what they are - people have them in certain parts of their body (hands, arms, legs, neck etc.) and it's constant! That means, what ever u do when ever u do it your hands would be shaking...if u are with a mom or a new person it wouldn't matter. Usually it's genetic disorder that transfers mostly from the mother's side. What you decribed is typical case of anxiety, being nervouse. Mostly it happens in the social situation so you have to ask yourself why it's ONLY then?! Is there any other situation of social matter that makes you shake too? Maybe you have social phobia, or you are just very shy and afraid to be judged. Now, in a state of fear, excitement etc. our adrenalin gets really really high and as we breath more faster our muscles are filling up with more air and they prepare to defende, so as there is no physical threat, muscles just get hyperactive and you start shaking - it's typical case of being nervouse. You have to build up more your confidence, try not to avoid all the social situations coz with practice you will feel more confortable (just as you mentioned what happens with the new people you meet) and the shaking will disapeare. Try not to isolate yourself coz you can only make it worse like that. Still you have a struggle to go through and you can't do it alone, so just to let you know you are not alone and to seek for some more informations go on: www.socialanxietysupport.com Don't worry! It will all be fine, it's curable and normal :) We all have some parts of anxiety (some more some less).
