Question: what is the disease caused by Bacillus erysipelas?
Answer: Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae cause erysipelas in pigs. It is characterized by diamond-shaped purple lesions on the skin of pigs. If it becomes a chronic infection, it might also cause arthritis and endocarditis, and for young pigs with a lower immune system, it might cause septicemia and death.
In humans, it is called "erysipeloid", because erysipelas is the name given to a certain form of streptococcus infection. Human infection is usually limited to farm workers, veterinarians, or other jobs that have constant contact with swine.
Question: My grandfather had erysipelas.(sp) What is it? He died from a heart attack, and I'm told that he was ill prior with this blood disease. (He died in 1960)
Answer: Definition
Erysipelas is a type of cellulitis (skin infection) generally caused by group A streptococci.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors
Erysipelas may affect both children and adults. The risk factors associated with this infection include local trauma (break in the skin), skin ulceration, and impaired venous or lymphatic drainage.
In the past, the face was most commonly involved yet now accounts for only up to 20% of cases. The lower extremities (legs) are affected in up to 80% of cases.
Symptoms
* An erysipelas skin lesion typically has a raised border that is sharply demarcated from normal skin. The underlying skin is painful, intensely red, hardened (indurated), swollen, and warm.
* Facial erysipelas lesions classically involve the cheeks and the bridge of the nose.
* Blisters may develop over the skin lesion.
* Fever and shaking chills are common.
Signs and tests
The diagnosis of erysipelas is based on the characteristic appearance of the skin lesion. Skin biopsies are usually not needed. Blood cultures are rarely positive (up to 5% of the time).
Treatment
The cornerstone of therapy is treatment with antibiotics such as penicillin, which are active against streptococci. Depending on the severity, intravenous antibiotics may be used. In less severe cases, oral antibiotics may be sufficient. In individuals who have recurrent erysipelas, long-term antibiotics may be required.
Expectations (prognosis)
If appropriate antibiotic therapy is given early, the outcome is favorable. Skin changes may take up to a few weeks to normalize and peeling is common.
In some patients, streptococci may travel to the blood (bacteremia) and additional sites may be involved such as heart valves, joints, and bones.
Complications
* If bacteremia is present, infection may spread to other areas such as joints, bones, and heart valves.
* Septic shock
* Recurrence of infection

Question: What is your opinion on the ethics of cancer treatments? From the first cancer treatments by William Coley of injecting strep throat bacteria into a patient's body (erysipelas) to modern day treatments with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, what is your opinion on the ethics of these treatments, and which one do you think is the most effective?
Answer: i think as long as it is explained to the patient, it is their choice to choose whatever treatment they and their doctor think is the best.
my dad had leukemia and underwent many experimental drugs that were not fda approved.

Question: I have erysipelas and want to redye my hair...? I've never had any problems before with dying my hair, ie no reactions or whatever. Last week my skin flared up and i was diagnosed with erysipelas, a skin condition type thing but i really need to redye my hair.
I checked the packet of the dye and it only says not to dye if you have an irritated or damage scalp and ...well, i don't...it's just my face that is still sore....so i'm thinking i should be ok if i put vaseline along my hairlines and etc. The rash is only on my ears and lower face so i really wanna dye it...
But i don't wanna make my face any sorer coz i have a fancy do im attending on saturday and it's only beginning to heal now.
Any advice or suggestions? =[
Answer: I did a little research on erysipelas and if it is only on your face, I think you might be alright. If it is on your scalp or anywhere the dye would reach, I would recommend not doing it.
If you decide to do it because it is only on your face, I would definitely line your entire face with vaseline, and then even put a piece of cotton (or bathroom tissue) stuck to it, like they do when it is professionally done. This way you have no chance of the liquid contacting the erysipelas.
Also, keep a wet washcloth nearby in case of an accidental splash or drip to wipe it off immediately.
I would just say use caution and be extremely careful. Good luck and I hope your hair looks great afterwards.
Question: how does erysipelas spread?
Answer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erysipelas
Question: If an oral abscess was lanced, and left untreated, could the resultant infection cause endocarditis? A death certificate, dated 1920, staes cause of death to be 'endocarditis resulting from erysipelas'
Three days prior, an oral abscess is lanced.
Would the resultant infection cause erysipelas?
Would the resultant infection cause endocarditis?
Answer: Standard treatment for acute staph infection in 1920 was lancing the abscess and hoping the infection healed after draining out the pus. Sometimes this worked and sometimes it didn't. In a very famous and highly publicized similar situation President Calvin Coolidge's son died in the White House from a lanced toe infected with staph aureus in 1924. If the infection didn't come out when the abscess was lanced, the infection would turn inward causing sepsis and death. I think that is what happened in the death certificate you mention. The person died from massive sepsis with the endocarditis being a likely final cause of death.
Question: Want to hear a great joke? Calvin sees Elmer and asks: What’s up?
Elmer says; first I got tonsillitis, followed by appendicitis and pneumonia. After that I got erysipelas with hemachromatosis. Following that I got poliomyelitis and finally ended up with neuritis. Then they gave me hypodermics and inoculations.
Calvin says: Boy, you had a time!
Elmer: I’ll say! I thought I’d never pull trough that spelling test.
Answer: Yea, that's interesting. Now where is that great joke you were talking about?
Question: add on from the last....? We changed his formula to soy milk advised by Dr.Stammler to add a small amount of cereal to the soy milk. Upon this doctor's visit, The Doctor also explained Pyloric Stenosis (which: is a condition that can cause your baby to vomit forcefully and often and may cause other problems such as dehydration and salt and fluid imbalances). Dr.Stammler said, if he worsens or persists then he will need an abdominal ultrasound.
ON NOV. 27, 2008, we took Noah to the Emergency Room at Lodi memorial hospital at 12:45pm because his gums started bleeding. To my horror the ER did nothing, Dr. Ali advised us to cut his nails and sent us home.
Noah is now just shy of 2 days of being 2 months old. We have been back and forth from several doctors' appointments and a trip to the ER with absolutely no resolution as to what is going on with our son's constant medical issues.
On (Dec. 4, 2008) we took Noah to get his first shots, he seemed to take it well. However during the visit, I asked Dr. Stammler about Noah bruising so easily. I notice the bruising mostly after he wakes up and also after picking him up.
After I reported my concerns, Doctor Stammler sent us to the Healthcare Clinical Laboratories to get a blood tests for Noah.
Two ladies' came in by the names of Courtney and Patty to draw the blood form Noah, why it took two nurses to draw the blood from, I do not understand. They had me hold my son upward in my lap with my hands on his chest, while they looked for a vein. Courtney then asked me to squeeze him tighter; I just sat there and held him, (Courtney) then put her hand on mine and pushed. My son was screaming so bad I then turned and blew into his mouth so he could take a breath. They poked him 2-3 times in his left arm, 1-2 times in his right arm and 1 in each hand. They got a little blood, then asked me to come back on Monday or Tuesday Dec.8th or Dec.9th. I then came back with my friend Brianna on Monday the 8th, again it was two ladies' by the name of Courtney and Jennifer, and one was the same nurse from the appointment on Dec. 4th, the other nurse was one I haven't seen before. At first they were going to try to take blood while he was in his car seat. But, the nurse from the last time we came in, picked him up and held him, she held his left upper arm above his elbow while the other held below his elbow. They searched for a vein and they just poked him, they shook the needle around in his arm and he screamed while she held him still. They then poked him in his left hand and finally got blood. For the next 2 days or so, Noah did not move his arm in the mornings, he just kept it still. I called Doctor Stammler to make another Appointment as soon as possible, but then Noah started moving his arm that night, so I didn't take him.
On Dec. 13TH, we brought Noah back to the Emergency Room at Lodi Memorial hospital at 2:38am. Noah had been crying, falling asleep and waking up off and on. The last time Noah woke up he cried a little, I saw a little swelling on his left side of his face, it looked as if something was going from his forehead down his whole left side. I immediately got him ready and headed for the ER. As we were leaving, we noticed under his left eye it started to bruise. While we were in the ER, I was looking at him, noticed his arm swollen and his hand bruising as if it wasn't getting circulation. I told the nurse to get the doctor, she said she would and she'd note my concern. The Doctor never came, therefore he never saw Noah's hand, but a nurse came in to gave Noah 2 shots to take the swelling down. They said it was ERYSIPELAS (WHICH IS A SUDDEN FORM OF CELLUITIS.) I didn't believe it is Erysipelas, but I know there is something wrong.
They asked us to come back the next evening, we did on Dec.13th. They gave him two more shots then called the police to file a CPS report for suspected child-abuse, but the claim was without warrant. CPS did not take custody at this time.
On Dec.18TH, I took Noah to a checkup because Dr. Stammler was out and I couldn't get one sooner. So Doctor Danni Basset checked Noah; she said he was fine and healthy. She checked his blood tests and it said his platelets were HIGH, and his white blood count was LOW. She told me Noah was ok, so I went home. Noah and I played for a bit, then I noticed he had diarrhea real bad so I gave him a bath; he got real tired, so I dressed him and put him down for a nap. Aaron came home for lunch , Noah woke up, Aaron then picked him up, changed him and brought him out to me. I made Noah a bottle, but Aaron noticed bruising on the inside of his right hand, Noah had it on his left hand before too.
I called Dr. Dannie, she sent me to a pediatrician by the name of Doctor Ishi. When I met with HIM on Dec.18th, Dr. Ishi stated, Noah was fine and healthy and that he may have sucked on his hand which may have left the marks on his hand, WHICH made no sens
Answer: This bruising is just not normal and is not just caused by the air something is going on. Sounds like he is losing circulation and that is causing the blue skin it's probably not a bruise. Being that both of his parents have health problems then they should have taken lots more tests. The blood is what should have tipped them off apparently Noah is having a poor circulation problem so that would cause the blood to not move like someone with normal circulation. What I am wondering is why the hell did you keep going to this fly by night doctor? By the second time around I would have gone to a different hospital with different doctors, why didn't you demand they do something for you son? They knew they could walk all over you. After so many unexplained trips to the emergency room the hospital begins to become suspicious and that is why they called CPS. The child needs to see a better doctor than this Dr. Stammler and Dannie. CPS needs to know this story I suggest printing this up and sending it to whom ever will listen and it will be many.
Question: Check this one out:? Buzz: "First I got tonsilitis, followed by appendicitis and pheumonia. After that I got erysipelas with hemachromatosis. Following that I got poliomyelitis and finally ended up with neuritis. Then they gave me hypodermics and inoculations."

Buzz: I'll say! I thought I'd never pull through that spelling test.
Answer: HA I love it here is a star for you.

Question: Jw's - Does Jehovah hate vaccinations as much as blood transfusions? Would the Almighty use Holy Spirit to direct a human organization to print something like this?
The Golden Age 1921 Oct 12 p.17
Vaccination never prevented anything and never will, and is the most barbarous practice... Use your rights as American citizens to forever abolish the devilish practice of vaccination.
The Golden Age 1929 May 1 p.502
Thinking people would rather have smallpox than vaccination, because the latter sows the seed of syphilis, cancers, escema, erysipelas, scrofula, consumption, even leprosy and many other loathsome affections. Hence the practice of vaccination is a crime, an outrage and a delusion.
Is the kind of medical advice you would stake your life on?
Toxic - I understand your point, but the jw leadership has asked for ultimate loyalty to their medical views, at the expense of their followers.
Desert Rose - you didn't answer the question. That might be grounds for reporting...
conundrum - very intelligent! According to that logic, the bible is even more useless than old watchtower quotes, right? I mean, it was written WAY before all of us were born... Although, to be fair, the bible IS kind of like a prop to jw's, something to decorate the table with while they read the current watchtower. I guess I can't blame you, though I hope for your sake you learn some critical thinking skills.
Answer: Not anymore, but they certainly did hate vaccinations in the past. When viewed over the past several decades, the Watchtower has softened its stand considerably on medical issues.
For example, the Watchtower's current position on blood transfusions and so-called "minor blood fractions" is questionable. As a preliminary matter, we should thank God (and the men and women in the medical profession) that the need for whole blood transfusions is less than it was a few years ago.
Nonetheless, there are still times where a whole blood transfusion (or a transfusion of "major" blood fractions that the Watchtower doesn't allow JWs to take) is necessary. For example, blood transfusions are often a matter of life or death in the case of massive blood loss due to a car accident or the like.
It is interesting how the Watchtower Society picks and chooses which parts of the Bible to take literally. Here, they teach that Paul's command to "abstain from blood" in Acts 15 means to COMPLETELY abstain from blood...which means that God forbids blood transfusions.
OK, but compare this to how they interpret 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 where Paul commands women to "be silent in the congregation." Is the Watchtower consistent? Does it teach that this means to be COMPLETELY silent? No, they make some exceptions to this rule based on (in my opinion) reasonable scriptural interpretation.
Also it is interesting that the Watchtower has relaxed its position on blood over the past decade. A few years ago, they decided to allow JWs to accept certain "minor" blood fractions.
Where to "minor" blood fractions come from? They come from DONATED BLOOD! This blood is not "poured out on the ground" as the Bible says; rather, it is donated by non-Witnesses to blood banks. Thus, JWs take blood from blood banks, just like non-JWs...they are just required to separate that blood into what the Watchtower calls "minor" fractions.
Question: Would you rather have smallpox than a vaccination? Jehovah's Witnesses used to believe so.? "Thinking people would rather have smallpox than a vaccination, because the later sows the seed of syphilis, cancers, eczema, erysipelas, scrofula, consumption, even leprosy and many other loathsome affections. Hence the practice of vaccination is a crime, an outrage and a delusion."
The Golden Age, January 5, 1929, p. 502.
to be fair, this quote is from 1929. But still, to be SO emphatic in their belief that they have it all right at ALL times.. makes me wonder when this current medical belief about blood will become foolish and embarassing like their vaccination doctrine above.
astroboy, the question is straight from the first line of the quote. "thinking people would rather have smallpox than a vaccination." I asked if YOU would rather have smallpox or a vaccination, based on this quote. get it?
THERESAJ, yeah, evidently vaccinations used to be against bible teaching, according to JWs. Aren't you glad you weren't a JW back then when polio and smallpox was going around? Now just pray to God you don't need an emergency transfusion...
now put that scripture in context instead of just those three words, and tell the class just what that means.
Answer: Not the first time religion has screwed with public health
Nigeria, religious officials stopped polio vaccinations. Because of their foolish beliefs, polio spread and killed thousands
One of the cardinals of the Catholic Church made a statement a few years ago, saying condoms are full of holes that allow HIV to go through, making them dangerous and ineffective. A bunch of a baloney that is plain wrong and harmful to people
Middle East. Just about everything they say about sex and health is completely wrong. Some people still believe sleeping with a virgin cleanses you of diseases.
Question: Please help.. Essay conclusion? easy 10 points!? This is my essay please come up with a concluding paragraph for me. i Stink at writing them. Easy 10 points. Please Read before you answer!: (please do NOT copy this as your own! Thank you!)
There are many languages in the world and they all came from the same source. As they have developed they have borrowed and created new words and such from their neighboring languages. An example of how a language has developed is that in the pre-1900’s America had very different names for illnesses. One instance was that “bronze john” was yellow fever and “canine madness” was rabies or hydrophobia. A way that languages have changed is the lobstermen dialect. It is becoming different because the lobsters are dying out and there is less use for it. An example of how languages influence each other is that the Mexican immigrants influence the Texas border cities and so now many of them speak Spanish, and some of them are considering making it their official language. Of course, there are many more ways languages develop, change, and influence each other and I will identify them in these next few paragraphs.
Languages develop all the time and for many different reasons. Some of these are that new technology needs new words and that the media creates new words and also that words become outdated and people create new, more refined terms for them. Technology needs new words because people are always inventing new things (cell phones, iPods, GPS, etc. etc.) and with theese new inventions we have new words based on what they can do (like texting or instant messaging). The media creates new words whenever a musician makes up a new word to rhyme with something in his/her song or a movie writer makes up a slang word for his/her actors and actresses to say. The “like, like, like, like...” phenomenon didn’t create itself, you know. And since people pay more attention to the media, people are apt. to adopt theese new words and sayings. Also, languages need to be kept sounding up to date. One instance of this is that in America in the years prior to 1900, diseases had very crude names. Some of theese were “Eel Thing”, which has since become Erysipelas (a skin infection), “Falling Sickness”, or Epilepsy, and “Pott’s Disease’, now tuberculosis of the spine. People apparently got fed up with things like “crushed by a railroad car” on their family members’ death certificates and demanded more specific things, such as “fractured skull” or “heart failure”, etc, etc.
Languages also frequently change, by word of even by pronunciation. When people move from place to place, they change the language and create their own new words and sayings. Also, languages might change if someone is in a certain profession or plays a certain sport. For instance, the immigrants from different countries move to the U.S.A and add new words and sayings borrowed from their own languages, like taco, fajita, and burrito (all Mexican). The lobstermen are a great example of how languages change; they made new words to accommodate their needs, and now it is changing again, with those new words being diminished as the lobster population and the need for those words is diminished. Sports also call for new words and slang sayings. Many surfers, for instance, have made new words to describe many things that happen to them while surfing. Some of theese words are: slammin (which means to take a fall), dialed in (which is used to refer to a mastered trick), and sick (awesome, great). Also, skateboarders and snowboarders have their own unique lingo. As for girls, they have developed “valley girl”, the name for the Californian girly-girl dialect, which emphasizes the “o” in words like go, and with terms like “he was all, “Yea”...she was all, “Whatever” and I was all....” (Describing a conversation).
Finally, languages influence each other in a variety of ways. Some of theese are that trade and travel influence other languages, also that they are influenced by people moving, past languages, and politics. Trade and travel play a big part in the influence of language. Even back in ancient times, trade was a way of communicating from place to place since people didn’t regularly travel long distances just for fun, like in today’s culture. Whilst on the trade routes, people from, say, China would trade with people from, say, Russia and use new words unfamiliar to the other person, they would then translate it and possibly, that Russian trader would bring along a new Chinese word back to his hometown with him and so on and so on. People moving influences language in a way similar to trade and travel. I will use the Mexican immigrants as an example. When Mexicans came to America, among other things, they brought their language and culture. When their culture became a part of the great melting pot, America adopted the words to say what theese new foreign things were, like Mariachi music and tacos and many other things. This happens when any new people of a different natio
This happens when any new people of a different nationality move into our country. Past languages influence the current language by people keeping past words as well as adopting new ones. Many old words are more refined than the current ones, because most new words are simply slang terms, but we still need the refined old words for college and important businesses to sound professional. Politics influence language because, since mostly everyone pays attention to them, when the President or candidate uses a slang term for his/her hometown, people might use it after hearing someone “important’ use it. Also, slang terms may even be invented to describe how a candidate acts.
