Answer: There are also formulas for the sum or difference of cubes: a³ + b³ = (a + b)(a² - ab + b²) a³ - b³ = (a - b)(a² + ab + b²) So x³ - 1 = (x - 1)(x² + x + 1) Using the quadratic equation on the second term, x = [-1 ± √(1 - (4)(1)(1))]/2   = -½ ± (√3 / 2)i So x³ - 1 = (x - 1)(x -(-½ + (√3 / 2)i)(x -(-½ - (√3 / 2)i)   = (x - 1)(x + ½ - (√3 / 2)i)(x + ½ + (√3 / 2)i) I'll let you deal with the other cubic term.

This is obviously not a real number! However, Sqrt(-9)=Sqrt(-1*9) =Sqrt(-1)*Sqrt(9). Sqrt(-1) is defined by the symbol i, and so your solutions for x are 3i and -3i. Thus, you can factor x^2+9 as (x+3i)(x-3i).
