I am now 16 wks pg with no problems.
Answer: I also have Factor V and have two children. I have had several blood clots. You should see a specialist and take 2 shots of heparin each day. That's what I had to do.
Question: dbSNP rs number for Factor V Leiden mutation? Does any one know the dbSNP identifier (i.e. the rs number) for the Factor V Leiden mutation? I know it's commonly reffered to as G1691A, but I'm trying to be precise and the best way to do that is to use an rs#. I find it really hard to believe that it's not annotated in the database.
Answer: It appears to be rs6025.
Question: My sister just tested positive for Factor V Leiden after a severe blood clot in her leg following surgery.? She is only carrying from one parent- will I definately have the hetero form? Nothing at all? Or is there a possibility I could get the homo form?? I am almost 17 weeks pregnant and a bit concerned.
Answer: Factor v Leiden, pronounced Factor Five Lye Den is indeed inherited, a blood test will show if you have it. If you do, you can take medication to control it. Blood thinner, but you will have to be checked periodically to adjust the medication. Tell your doctor the next time you have a regular appointment. You may not have inherited it, and if you have done so it can be treated, controlled and you can live a normal life.

progesterone-only birth control pills are fine. there is no linked issues between them and factor V.
the Mirena IUD is a progesterone only birth control.

Question: Factor V Leiden, pregnancy and contraception? Can someone please give me some advantages and disadvantages of being on the pill and of other contraceptives, whilst having the factor V leiden mutation. Also the pros and cons of pregnancy whilst having the mutation.
Many thanks, 10 points for top answer :)
Answer: In short, you shouldn't the the combined Pill (oestrogen containing) if you have factor V Leiden due to the increased risk of clots. If you do take it, you are up to 4 times more likely (1 in 500 risk) to have thrombosis which is an unacceptable risk. Consider using another method of contraception. What about the IUD?
Obviously there is an increased risk of VTE during pregnancy and an increased risk of complications during pregnancy. Low molecular weight heparin during pregnancy has been shown to be safe and effective in preventing VTE in susceptible patients.
Question: Information on factor V leiden? I was wondering if anyone has any experience with factor V leiden (heterozygous) with coumadin therapy. Is it something one can live long with? I know it can be fatal if unchecked but i was just wondering how everyone else has experienced it or know someone who experienced it.
Answer: my girlfriend has factor 5 leiden... its a blood disorder where the platelets in your body are too abundandt and you clot really quickly... they are prone to blood clots very badly in their lungs and especially in their legs. her grandmother had it (undiagnosed) and never took any blood thinners for it... sh elived to about 50 yrs old.
Question: has anybody got factor v leiden ? i have just been diagnosed with factor v leiden after getting a DTV and now when i fly i have to have blood thinning medication apart from that it doesn't affect my everyday life,i was just wondering if anybody else has it and if it has affected you in anyway ?
Answer: i don't have factor v leiden per se, but i do have a clot factor, so it's similar.
when i have surgery, i have to take blood thinning medication for several weeks after.
if i were to ever get pregnant, they would monitor my blood to decide if i needed medication then.
if i fly, i only need ted hose, unless i am flying around the world, then i would need a dose or so of blood thinner.
i am currently on 1 baby aspirin a day for a blood thinner, but that is more to do with my kidney transplant's risks that simply for the clot factor.
other than the medical side, i have no effects in my life! :)
Question: Anyone know anything about Factor V Leiden Syndrome? I was recently diagnosed with Factor V, which came about because I had a deep vein clot in my arm. Can anybody give some advice about precautions to take (I'm on coumadin for three months) in the future? Or just tell me about their own personal experiences?
Answer: Factor V Leiden Thrombophilia is the most common inherited disorder of blood clotting. It is the result of a specific mutation in the gene for factor V which leads to increased risk for clots in the large veins of the legs (deep venous thrombosis), or clots that travel though the bloodstream and embed in the lungs (pulmonary embolism). It is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner.
Please see the webpages for more details on Factor V Leiden syndrome and Anti-coagulants (coumadin).
Question: Has anyone had a baby with Factor V Leiden? I have Factor V Leiden and 8 PE's and want to know if anyone has had a baby and how it all went?
Answer: I found out at 13 weeks pregnant that I had a DVT in my right calf and I was put straight onto twice daily injections of Enoxaprain (Clexane in some countries, Lovenox in others) until I went into labour. I carried to term and then some and had a healthy 9lb 3oz baby who is now 3 months old. After delivery I had to take Warfarin for 12 weeks and I am now on my 6 week break before I start test for Factor V Leiden and Thrombophillia (as I had a CVA in my brain at 18 also) and I am almost certain that the test will come back positive. Anyway, it's not completely relevant to you as your condition is diagnosed but my pregnancy went well, the injections weren't very nice but the end result is amazing.
Question: how long has factor v leiden been known? its a disease.
Answer: Since 1994......this has been already answered.
Question: What are my birth control options if I'm positive for factor v leiden? I'm 32 & was just diagnosed.? One IUD option I found was ParaGuard. Want to know if this is safe to be on since it's non hormonal. Looking for answers besides condoms. I'm in a serious relationship & don't like the feel of them. I'm not on any meds for the FV Leiden. It was discovered due to a family history. Myself & 2 sisters are all positive, my brother is negative.
Answer: As I understand it, women with Factor V Leiden cannot use any method that contains estrogen. So all combined pills, the nuvaring, and the patch are out (because they contain estrogen as well as progesterone), but progestin-only pills (also known as POPs or minipills) are ok. You could also use a Paraguard IUD (no hormones) OR a Mirena IUD (small amounts of progesterone), Depo-Provera, or Implanon.
Question: Smoking with Factor V Leiden? I am 20 and I was just diagnosed with Factor V Leiden.. I don't smoke but I do go to the hookah bar with my friends about once every 2 months and a hookah filled with flavored tobacco (shisha).. should cut this out has well since it has some tobacco in it? or is it okay?
Answer: The presence of acquired risk factors for venous thrombosis -- including smoking, use of estrogen-containing (combined) forms of hormonal contraception use, and recent surgery -- further increase the chance that an individual with the factor V Leiden mutation will develop DVT.
Question: Factor V Leiden and Wanting to try to conceive? I found out that I have Factor V Leiden (clotting disorder) after my 9th blood clot in my left leg. I had one healthy pregnancy with my son back in 2006, but five days after giving birth I ended up in the hospital with blood clots. They thought it was due to pregnancy and signed it off. I got pregnant again in June of 2008 and had a miscarriage. They were concerned about my clotting issue and took me off my coumadin. During that two week period, I ended up getting another clot which prompted the blood test to find out that I actually have Factor V Leiden.
Now I have more questions!
I was told my husband and I could try to conceive again (after going on lovenox) but I was worried about the risks associated with it and what chances there are to have another miscarriage/still birth.
I also heard that you can only have 2 child due to being high risk. Is that true?
Is it harder to get pregnant if you have this blood mutation?
Personal experiences would be appreciated and serious answers only, please.
Thanks a bunch!
Answer: Hate to burst your bubble, but it's too risky for you to get pregnant. If I were your doctor, I would advise against having your own baby.
Question: factor v leiden? So i am about 7 weeks pregnant and i have just been diagnosed with factor v leiden. My mom discovered she had it a couple months ago because she had a blood clot in her lungs. Since its genetic the family had to get tested for it. I read a little bit about it and it listed pregnancy as one of the things that triggers it. I dont quite understand what this is. They think this might be the reason my sister had complications when she was pregnant. i know one thing she had was preeclampsia im not sure what else i was only in fourth grade when this happened but i know she was unconscious and near death but then woke up, delivered, and what better. It was really a miracle. Does anyone know what this is or has it? Is my baby going to be okay?
Answer: I was tested for this after a miscarriage. It can cause miscarriage, it wasn't what caused mine though. Your doctor should be able to treat it, I believe. Check with your doctor and see what he thinks. Good luck! And don't worry too much.
