Question: anemia.....?!? well...my mom was diagnosed with anemia not to long ago, meaning she gives off to much blood during her period. now she's on these pills and must be on a high iron diet. but my question is...what would've happened to her if she didn't see a doctor about this?....what would of eventually happened to her if she was doing nothing about it? also, what are the chances of me getting anemia?

Answer: She'd get very weak and become susceptible to other problems. Untreated, eventually it would damage her heart and other vital organs. Severe anemia has been associated with various forms of heart disease. Because the body is receiving less oxygen, the heart responds by working harder to pump more blood through the body. In cases of severe anemia, the overworked heart may begin to dilate, causing an enlarged heart or cardiomyopathy. This may eventually lead to heart failure. You should make a point to have your iron and ferritin levels checked regularly and know the symptoms of anemia. http://www.4woman.gov/faq/anemia.htm
