Question: Acute promyelocytic leukemia help? Acute promyelocytic leukemia represents 5-8% of AML in adults. The median age is approximately 40 years, which is considerably younger than the other subtypes of AML (70 years). this is the epidemiology of APML, does it mean that the approximate age is 40 when people get it, or the approxmiate age of people when they die from treatment of it? i had a bit of trouble understanding the word epidemiology.
Answer: The MEDIAN age is app 40. The median number is the number that seperates the higher half of the numbers from the lower half of the numbers.
So if I had these numbers
10 13 16 22 33 40 45 46 52 54 56
There are 11 numbers here, so if they are arranged numerical, the number in the middle, in this case the 6th number, is the median. So in this case, 40 is the median. BUT, the avg of this string of numbers is 35.7.

Question: If my chemotherapy works, how long will it take for my leukemia to go into remission? I have acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), and I'm scheduled for chemo next week. I'm 16, if that helps.
Answer: It should only take about 4 weeks before a bone marrow biopsy can tell what effect the chemo had on the leukemia. Hopefully it'll be in remission. If not, they'll just hit it with more chemo until it does go into remission. But if it doesn't go into remission on the first treatment, they'll probably look into a bone marrow transplant due to the aggressiveness of the cancer. Your cytogenetics are also a factor to how well your body will react to the chemo. The higher the cyto the better you'll respond to the chemo.
Question: is AML the more fatal type of cancer than APL? is AML more fatal than APL? (acute promyelocytic leukemia)
Answer: Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is actually a subtype of acute myelogenous leukemia. So you can think of APL as a kind of AML. (In other words, all APLs are AMLs, but not all AMLs are APLs.)
APL is considered the most curable form of AML. It appears the cure rate is around 60 to 75%.
