Question: I have vanishing twin syndrome how do I know if I am identical or fraternal? I have vanishing twin syndrome and I was wondering is there a way to know if I was identical or fraternal?
Answer: What? Your MOTHER would have experienced vanishing twin syndrome, not you. You would have to ask your mother if she new wether you two were twins or fraternal.. however most mother don't know they're pregnant with twins when they have VTS, they just go through the pregnancy thinking they've had one all along.
Question: What are the hcg levels like typically after vanishing twin syndrome? I had a miscarriage. My hCG level has gone from strongly positive to faintly, barely positive with an early detection first response test after my miscarriage. Some suggest it could be VTS. But how could it be if the HCG levels are so low and declining? I had heavy bleeding during my miscarriage for 5 days and passed grey and brown tissue and experienced a lot of pain.
Answer: I lost a twin to VTS about 5 weeks ago. My levels were never tested after I lost the twin, but from what I have read, the levels don't decrease they just don't continue to go up as fast as they did with twins. I didn't have any signs or symptoms of a miscarriage, but I was told that I might. Did they not do an ultrasound to check things? We found out that one of the babies had stopped developing during a follow-up ultrasound. The other baby was still there and growing right on schedule. My advice would be to phone your doctor and ask them. Maybe there will do a scan and see if anything is still in there. Good luck.
Question: Is there such a thing as a vanishing twin syndrome? I have read about a claim that all humans are born as twins but, in most cases, at the very first stages of embryo development, the second baby vanishes, leaving a single foetus behind. However, I read about it in a book of fiction--the sort of book where the writer can fabricate all sorts of things freely.
Answer: you must have read wrong. b/c not everybody is born as a twin. that doesn't happen very often. but it happens very early in pregnancy. when a women gets an ultrasound very early in pregnancy and finds out that she's having twins. but later in the pregnancy when she is about 3 - 4 months along, they will give her another ultrasound and only find one baby. that is called vanishing twin syndrome, when the cells merge into one or the other one dies off and only one is left. there is such thing.
everybody being born as a twin is FALSE.
Question: How dangerous is vanishing twin syndrome? A friend of mine just found out that one of her twins passed away at 10 weeks. I am not sure how far along she is but the placenta and the baby have not been reabsorbed like it should be yet. My question is how dangerous is this for her and for the remaining baby? She did have a miscarriage just about 9 months before she found out that she was pregnant with twins. If anyone knows about this please let me know. Also anyone that will pray for her it is greatly appreciated.
Answer: John,
This happened to my cousin....She carried the dead baby full term...The surviving child was born very healthy. She is seven years old now...Mom and baby are fine.
I am sure..she will be fine...give her lots encouragement.
Question: Hi, this is about vanishing twin syndrome, just hoping theres a midwife out there reading this? I am currently 16wks 6days with my 4th pregnancy, i started bleedingquite badly at 8wks, i had an emergency scan and everythnig looked fine with the baby, i carried on bleeding so they gave me another scan, which the consultant found evidence of a vanishing twin, he couldnt see anything in the 2nd bag as it was full of blood, no-one as told me anything from that point, im still bleeding, ive bled for 8weeks and 4 days now, its really dark, i just feel like they havent explained anything to me, why am i still bleeding? there must be someone out there somewhere who has had a similar experience, i feel ill all the time, i bleed constantly and suffer cramps and have constant headaches...plz plz plz can some-one offer me any advice xXx
Ive had 3 scans upto now, on the last one which was done about 2 weeks ago, the doctor just said that i will be classed as at risk of loss, but they never mentioned when the bleeding should stop or when they would consider this baby to be safe, im really confused, i have my 20 week scan on the 29th of this month, so im hopin that explains a bit more, i guess i just wanted someone to have some experience with this :S xXx
Sorry, i meant to add, i have miscarried the dead fetus, my waters broke with that bag at around 14 weeks but im sure the fetus didnt come out, but they cant say as the bag keeps rehealing itself and filling with blood, they cant see in the bag, it gets really full and i bleed again quite heavily :(
Answer: It sounds as if you were pregnant with twins to begin with however one fetus hasn't survived and your body is trying to deal with it without affecting the existing pregnancy sac.
Go back to the Doctor and ask them to explain things fully, you might also want to get your full blood count checked as it sounds as if you may be anaemic. They should be keeping a closer eye on you anyway to make sure everything stays well.
Keep yourself hydrated, its not good to loose so much blood - especially when your pregnant.
Best of luck
Question: Who else has experienced the "Vanishing Twin" Syndrome and when did you find out? Our (former) OB had no clue that our second baby had "vanished" until an Ultrasound Technician told us at 22 weeks that we only had one baby.
I'd like to hear from others that have experienced this. Specifically, when you were told and what did they tell you about it?
Thanks in advance.
In response to "thejezowskis"
We had an ultrasound at 9 weeks at the Fertility Center and it showed them side by side. Then we switched to our regular OB-GYN and had 5 Dopplers and 2 more Ultrasounds in which we were told we had "two healthy babies". The last Ultrasound in the OB's office was two weeks before the [outsourced] Ultrasound where they told us we only had one baby. We were shocked because we figured the second baby "vanished" at about 12-14 weeks and our (former) OB had no clue.
Answer: Vanishing twins are actually quite common believe it or not. With the modern practitioners doing ultrasounds very early in pregnancy they have found that it happens quite often (maybe explains left handed people since they tend to be a twin). That's part of the reason I can wait until the ultrasound at 20 weeks and not get an early one. I'd rather wait until I'm measuring large and they hear a possible second heartbeat to get an earlier one. I am so sorry for your loss - I can't imagine what you're going through at this later stage of the game. I'm honestly surprised they didn't do another scan between the last one and the most recent one. There is, unfortunately, no known reason but they do speculate that the second twin just wasn't healthy enough to make it.
Again, I am sorry for your loss but I hope the rest of your pregnancy is healthy and uneventful and you enjoy your little bundle of joy!

Question: Does anyone know the characteristics of the surviving twin in Vanishing twin syndrome??
Answer: There is some evidence here http://www.altheahayton.com/wombtwin/res…
if you click on the link on that page. I'm not sure how scientific it is but it might be helpful if you are a surviving twin. If not, I had a wee look on the psychinfo database and couldn't immediately come across any peer reviewed research on personality of surviving twins.
Question: vanishing twin syndrome?? i heard about vanishing twin syndrome and being left handed and that they are connected and i was wondering if all left handed people were the surviving twin.
Answer: not all twins are mirror twins, where one is left handed and one right. if you was a twin and was never told, look on your birth certificate because only twins have the time they were born as well as the date.
Question: Hoping for twins! I previously had vanishing twin syndrome? On my mother side there has been multiple twin births from her mother and her father side however no one has had any 3 generations down, except for my mothers cousins any chances that i might have inherited the fraternal twin gene... my great grand mother had 3 sets of twins.. my mothers aunts all had at least one pair of twins and one had 2 pairs... im only 11 weeks pregnant from 2nd child and i had the vanish twin syndrome with him however i know that identical twins are not genetic or inherited unless im wrong.. my mom also had vanishing twin from my younger syster
Answer: I don't know what the actual question is, but since all the twins run on your mothers side of the family and you had the syndrome, yes your chances are higher than most!
Question: I am 11 weeks pregnant but I believe I'm experiencing the vanishing twin syndrome...? Please look at the following link, any advice what the 2nd circle represents will help, also, I have had dry blood very little and water about 1/4 of a cup exit my body yesterday. Dr. stated no need to come in but if I am experiencing a vanishing twin not to worry it will absorb back into my body, yes I am happy with one but I am experiencing a sense of loss, and dh has no idea how I feel, anyone else experienced this? The tech was a rookie so she didn't even notice the 2nd circle will the Dr. tell me if it was a vanishing twin? Thank you in advance for all your support. Also, please e-mail me if your in my situation too I would love to relate to someone about this or I think it's all in my head.

Answer: Not to belittle your loss but I'm sure lots of women have had this happen. Some women miscarry a twin. It doesn't vanish back into the mother. They have actual miscarriages. So grieve your loss but not too much bc you still have a healthy baby in there.
