Question: pre eclampsia? I was just wondering if any one else who had pre eclampsia felt a bit 'high' after having the magnesium sulfate? Im not sure if it was that but I was definately not myself and I felt great while I was having it but extremely ill before and after. I remember telling the doctors and nurses repeatedly how good I felt. I kinda feel a little silly now.
Answer: Well I just got out of the hospital and they had me on an I.V. drip of Magnesium Sulfate for at least one entire day, plus some of the next. It really made me feel like I was in an oven melting. Not only that it made me hot, it just made me feel like I was a pile of mush. I even had double vision on this medication. I really have to say I didn't like it that much. I am glad that you had a good experience.
Question: pre - eclampsia? i am 38 weeks + 4 days and had midwife appoint yday, i have very swollen legs, feet and ankles, bp was bit hi and had protein in urine. i was sent to hosp for bp monitoring and once this was done they said its still a bit high and still protein in sample, blood sample was borderline for pre- eclampsia. i was sent home with a 5 litre bottle to collect urine for the next 24 hours and have to go back tomorrow to check again. they said if i feel sick or unwell to call before then and that if i come in tomorrow and its increased they mite need to do an internal, what would they need to do this for? i asked if i would need to be induced yday and they said not at the moment. what do u think my chances are of this happening tomorrow? my mum, gran and sister had pre- eclampsia. has any1 else had to this and had to collect 24 hours of urine and if so what was the outcome?
Answer: I had high blood pressure through my entire pregnancy. They put me on medicine and sent me to the hospital twice a week for non-stress tests and checked my urine samples. I also had protein in my urine, but I was told it was a normal amount. My feet and legs were swollen horribly. My doctor said it was +2 adema. He was worried that I would develope pre-eclampsya, so he induced me at 39 weeks. I think if they induce you, it will also be at 39 weeks. They like to try to get as close as they can to your 40 weeks if at all possible. They did start collecting my urine when I was in the hospital, the night before I was induced to make sure my protein levels remained normal.I hope I helped you at least a little bit, and best wishes to you and your little one.
Question: is it possible to get pre eclampsia in my second pregnancy? about two weeks ago i had and emergency c-section because i was diagnosed with pre eclampsia.i was only 35 weeks.is it possible to get pre eclampsia if i got pregnant later on in the future.
Answer: Preeclampsia is most often seen in first-time pregnancies and in pregnant teens and women over 40. Other risk factors include:
* A history of high blood pressure prior to pregnancy.
* Previous history of preeclampsia.
* A history of preeclampsia in mother or sisters.
* Obesity prior to pregnancy.
* Carrying more than one baby.
* History of diabetes, kidney disease, lupus, or rheumatoid arthritis.
Question: How can i prevent Pre Eclampsia at home? Ok I am just seven months pregnant and lost all my medical benefits so i cant afford to see a doctor, but i think i may have Pre Eclampsia. what can i do at home? i cant afford to go to the doctor right now and i am scared. i dont know what to do can someone offer me some good advice?
Answer: You need to see a Doctor! Not only are you risking your baby you are risking your life as well. When your blood pressure get into toxic levels you could suffer a stroke that could endanger your life and the babies life. If you are 28 weeks gestation or later your baby has a very good chance of not being very sick, but still you need to see your doctor and have this checked out. if you are ok the cost will be minimal compared to the bill you will get if you have a stroke.
You have not told us why you think you have pre eclampsia, so I am not sure that you have it, but when something that serious is in question it is better to be safe then sorry.
Question: At what point in pregnancy would a woman generally start developing pre-eclampsia? If a woman is going to develop pre-eclampsia, at what point do symptoms generally start appearing?
Answer: It can develop as early as 22 weeks. Most women get it in the third trimester.
Question: How dangerous is pre-eclampsia if developed at 37 weeks? I have had pretty severe swelling in my hands and feet for well over a month now and the doctor has been monitoring my blood pressure closely to make sure I'm O.K. - Today at my 37 week check-up my blood pressure had gone up a lot so he said I should get blood work done right away to make sure everything is O.K. and that I need to come back in 2 days to check in with him and re-test my blood pressure. He said at that point we could discuss options for speeding the delivery process along if I do indeed have pre-eclampsia....he said the fact that the baby is already considered "full term" is good and that I shouldn't worry too much. Anyone else go through something like this? It's kind of hard not to worry.
Answer: As far as the baby goes, they can quickly induce or deliver via c-section if necessary and will do just fine because you are technically full-term.
However in terms of your health, being 37 weeks has no bearing on how serious your pre-eclampsia could be now or could potentially become. It's certainly nothing to mess around with. If your labs are off, if you're putting out a lot of protein in your urine and you're pressures are high, it can easily and quickly turn into full-blown eclampsia, which involves seizures, some degree of liver failure, and possibly blood clotting disorders. This is rare.
The vast majority of the time severe cases of pre-eclampsia are controlled and is prevented from progressing to eclampsia by a magnesium sulfate IV drip and by delivering the baby. But you are still at risk for at least a week after delivery and will need to be watched closely before discharge.
Until your next visit, be mindful of symptoms of worsening pre-eclampsia - floaty spots in your field of vision, increase in headaches and swelling, decrease in urine output despite good hydration, or a pain in the upper-right area of your stomach that feels similar to severe heartburn. Call your doctor's office or hospital at any time if these things happen or worsen.
Good luck!
Question: Is it possible to develop pre eclampsia with your second child and not the first? This is my second pregnancy and I asked a question a few minutes ago about rapid weight gain in a two week period and migraines and some of the answers included pre eclampsia so I was wondering if you can develop it in your second pregnancy or if its something that you have every pregnancy because I did not have it with my first. I may not have it now, but I just wanted to do some research. Thanks guys and I wont ask anymore questions for awhile lol
Answer: Yep, sure is. Each pregnancy is different and can come with a different set of symptoms/diagnosis. Your doctor will let you know if you are at risk for developing preeclampsia (sp?). The first give away is blood pressure and protein in your urine. I'm currently seeing a specialist and being watched for it myself due to having had high blood pressure earlier in pregnancy.
Question: Where can I find more information on cardiac output and pre-eclampsia? I am trying to find any research that is available for public consumption on the relationship between high cardiac output and pre-eclampsia. We will be monitored for cardiac output when we conceive but I would like to know what it entails, what the possible outcomes could be, etc.
Answer: You will find everything you need at the following website:

Question: How do I know if it's pre-eclampsia? I am 14weeks pregnant. I have been getting really bad headaches, and i do get black spots sometimes but not too often. A couple of people have told me it may be pre-eclampsia. I plan to go to my doctors tommorrow but can anyone please tell me anything more about it and what risks it has to me and my baby if this is it.
Thank you.
I forgot to put that i have a high risk of eclampsia as i have been pregnant with twins before.
Answer: It is basicly stress on you and your baby, the best thing for you to do is rest and take it easy until you can see you doctor. Sounds like it might be preclampsia. Good luck to ya!!
Oh ps...try to be calm while at the doctors, getting worried about it will make your blood pressure go up and maybe give them a false reading.
Question: What are some causes of high blood pressure in pregnancy other than pre-eclampsia..? My friend is pregnant too - we're due two days apart (July 4th & July 6th). She went to the doctor today and her blood pressure was 162/96 and has never been out of normal range until today. However, there was no protein in her urine and they said that rules out pre-eclampsia and they're re-checking her blood pressure in the morning. So i'm wondering, what else would cause it to jump this high?
Thanks in advance.
Answer: What Causes High Blood Pressure - Hypertension
Quite a few people in this world dont know what causes high blood pressure and hypertension. Hypertension is more common in blacks, and the risk increases with age. One-fourth of people in the United States between the ages of 20-74 have hypertension, and three-fourths of women and two-thirds of men over 75 have hypertension.
Blood pressure is described by two values:
- The highest pressure in the arteries when the heart contracts.
- The lowest pressure just before the heart contracts.
When you take your blood pressure look for certain numbers to inform you if your pressure is high or low. Blood pressure is considered high when the systolic pressure is above 140 and the diastolic pressure is above 90.
When a change in blood pressure occurs, the body has a sudden means of returning back to normal. These include changing the amount of blood that the heart pumps, controlling the diameter of the arteries, and changing the volume of blood in the bloodstream. The kidneys can also control blood pressure by excreting salt and water in the blood so that the blood volume decreases.
People who have hypertension, the increase in pressure may be due to a change in the heart, blood vessels or an increase in the blood volume. Other factors contributing to hypertension include an inherited abnormality, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, stress, smoking, excessive alcohol and salt.
Most people with hypertension experience no symptons from hypertension itself, however, once damage has occurred to other organs as a result of hypertension like the brain, eyes, heart or the kidneys. Symptoms of those conditions may manifest themselves as headaches, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, restlessness, and blurred vision. The higher the pressure, the more likely you are to experience a stroke, heart failure or early death.

Question: pre-eclampsia? 34 weeks with twins. i have noticed seeing flashy silver spots in my peripheral vision. i asked a question a while ago about them and i have been doing some research online. all i can find is that the spots are a warning sign for pre-eclampsia and everything i read about pre-eclampsia is pretty serious...like bedrest and a battery of tests (possibly early delivery). have any of you ever had pre-eclampsia? if so were you ordered on bed rest? did you have to deliver early? please share your experience with me. i have an appointment in the morning and i will be able to talk to my doctor about it then...but im just wanting as much information about it as i can now. thanks!
oh and i have had no high blood pressure so far in my pregnancy. and i have no other warning signs for pre-eclampsia...so i dont even know if this is what i have or if it is something else. obviously i will let my doctor decide...but do you know of anything else it could be?
Answer: First of all, try not to worry - as long as you are receiving regular pre-natal care your doctor will be watching for signs of pre-eclampsia/toxemia. I had severe pre-eclampsia with my first, and was hospitalized at 36 weeks. I had only slightly elevated blood pressure prior to the doctor's appt that ended up with my being admitted to hospital. I had severe swelling in my legs beginning at around 30 weeks (poke test - poke your leg, and if the dent stays, there's a problem), I felt generally ill and had loss of appetite in the days leading up to that last regular doctors appt. I don't recall visual disturbances, but I suffer from migraines and may have assumed any headache or visual disturbance was just another migraine. Your doctor may do a urine test to check for protein in your urine, especially if your blood pressure is elevated at all. A sudden and unexplained gain in weight can also be a sign or pre-eclampsia.
I was told if my blood pressure went down I would be put on bed rest at home until delivery. My blood pressure peaked at 170/110 and would not go down so after 2 days in hospital I was induced and my daughter was born at 36wks & 6 days. She was perfectly healthy if a little annoyed at joining the world early (she just wanted to sleep all the time)
My doctor assured me repeatedly that my daughter was in no danger, it was me that was sick, so don't worry about your babies - your doctor will do what is best for all 3 of you!
I'm now on pregnancy number 4 and have never had another problem with pre-eclampsia, despite being high risk for it, so just because it happens once doesn't mean it will happen again. Try to keep any stress in your life to a minimum.... I have no doubt stress contributed to my issue.
Good luck at your appt!
Question: has anyone ever had obstetric cholestasis or pre eclampsia? heya i had it with my daughter and am planning another child but am really really scared i will get it again, i also had gall stones and pre eclampsia with that pregnancy and was induced at 38 weeks and ended up with a c section because of it . if anyone has had more than one baby and had the condition could you please fill me in. also stories of your exp would be nice for both as i just want something to NOT be worried about
Answer: yes you can get everything again, you will tend to find people who have never had these problems think they know more, speak to your doctor, they will tell you that with every pregnancy there is risks of everything whether youve had them before or never! I myself had a perfectly healthy first pregnancy, which due to being overdue and baby being in distress, i too had to have an emergency c-section. Im now currently pregnant with my second child (36wks) and iv had every problem there is! Im being induced monday thanks to Cholestasis - But even tho my first pregnancy resulted in a c-section, and the fact that i have cholestasis, there is no reason why i cant try natural! I have the choice whether to be induced and try natural or to go to theatre for a section (i still havent decided what to do!!).
Dont let people or whats happened scare you, if we all let these things bother us we'd never have children. Listen to your heart and if you want more kids go for it... Your doctor will look after you (iv had fortnightly checkups with an obstetrician all thru my pregnancy as well as scans once a month!) SO long as you keep up to date with your apointments, you will be fine. And you will be in the best hands if they were to think something wasnt right.
Question: Can the swelling and headaches of pre-eclampsia come and go? This is my 2nd preg. With my first preg, I developed pre-eclampsia at 37 weeks. I am now 36 weeks with #2 and had very swollen hands and a headache for 4 days over the past weekend, despite drinking extra water to help combat the swelling. Now the swollen hands have gone down a bit and the headache is mostly gone. I haven't talked to the doc yet. Is it possible for these symptoms to come and go and still point to pre-e?
Answer: Did you go to see your doctor as soon as you had these symptoms since you had pre-eclampsia the first time around?
Of course the swelling and headaches will come and go but this does not mean you shouldn't see your doctor and have it checked out, especially if the headache lasted for 4 days.
Please be checked out by your OB or L&D
Question: How does pre-eclampsia effect my baby? I am 35 weeks and three days pregnant and yesterday my midwife told me that i have pre-eclampsia. She has told me that is i get blurred vision, spots in front of my eyes or a headache again i am to go to the hospital.
I understand this and i understand the different symptoms you can get but what i would like to understand is how pre-eclampsia is effecting my baby.
I really hope that someone can give me an insight on this or even a web page that explains it all in a easy to understand way.
Answer: I found this on webmd I hope it helps you. Good luck.
Preeclampsia can prevent the placenta from receiving enough blood, which can cause your baby to be born very small. It is also one of the leading causes of premature births and the difficulties that can accompany them, including learning disabilities, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and hearing and vision problems.
Question: what is pre eclampsia? What is the treatment for it, does it repeat in every pregnancy, how can v prevant it? My wife had pre eclampsia in last pregnancy, she is 16 Weeks pregnant now, We r giving her Enoxaparin Sodium 20 mg Subcutanous as a precautionary medicine along with Aspirin 37.5 mg.
Answer: Pre eclampsia is pregnancy induced hypertension - or high blood pressure. Treatment usually includes a high protein diet and bed rest.
My midwife stated that pre eclampsia usually only occurs in a first pregnancy, and will not recur with subsequent children. There are exceptions to that, however, and your wife should be monitored carefully.
Quick question - did the doctor advise/prescribe the medication your wife is taking? And if so, did he know that she was pregnant at the time? Or has he been informed of her pregnancy since? If not, call the doctor immediately to inform him - they may alter treatment.
Question: Can I have a normal pregnancy after pre-eclampsia? Last year I had a miscarriage at 23 weeks due to pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure and kidney problem) at the beginning of my pregnancy which is very unusual because it's normally happen towards the very end of the normal pregnancy. As a result I am now suffered high blood pressure and kidney damage. After 12 months monitoring my health my doctor gave the green light to try again. I want to know anyone has the same problem and what happen to your subsequent pregnancy. Thanks
Answer: I would like to know the answer to this as well. I had preeclampsia with my first pregnancy and delivered my son via c section at 24 weeks. He is fine though. Im so sorry you lost your baby. Were you tested for any clotting disorders? After my son, I was tested and came up positive for MTHFR. I am currently pregnant with my second and I am terrified that its going to come back and I won't be so lucky this time. :( Any success stories would be great!
