Question: Can doctors prescribe the birth control pill for women with primary amenorrhea? I'm 17 and I've never had a period, so I'm in the primary amenorrhea category. Thing is, I'm getting worried about it and I've been to the doctors (they've already run blood tests and now they're going to send me to a gyno) but what I was wondering was could they prescribe the pill for me to 'kick start' my periods? Are there any instances in where the pill is used to stop amenorrhea?
Please help!
Answer: Those are questions you need to ask your gynecologist when you go. Make a list and make sure all your questions are answered.
Question: What causes primary amenorrhea in women? This amenorrhea is accompanied by hirsutism although there appears to be normal development of everything else. Does not look like cushings syndrone.
Answer: The hirsutism makes me suspect PCOS.
PCOS is a health problem that can affect a woman’s menstrual cycle, fertility, hormones, insulin production, heart, blood vessels, and appearance. Women with PCOS have these characteristics: high levels of male hormones, also called androgens an irregular or no menstrual cycle may or may not have many small cysts in their ovaries. Cysts are fluid-filled sacs. PCOS is the most common hormonal reproductive problem in women of childbearing age. Please see your OB/GYN or endocrinologist to find out what could be causing the ammenorrhea.
Question: what are some possible causes and treatment of primary amenorrhea? My cousin is 19yrs and never had a period, she appears healthy other wise. The gynecologist did a pap smear, ulta sound and even genetic test but cant seem to find a cause. We are all perplexed
Answer: It sounds like she has primary ovarian failure. She could check out the book and web page here: http://www.earlymenopause.com/
That might be helpful. They talk in detail about causes and treatment. Unfortunately, I don't think they can figure it out in most cases. I recommend she see Dr. Michael Heard in Texas http://www.houstonrei.org/about_us.php or Dr. Nanette Santoro in New York http://www.revolutionhealth.com/articles… They're both experts in premature ovarian failure and can help your cousin to get on the right hormone regimen and maybe also figure out why she has this. It's really important to get on the right hormone regimen--there are major health risks of never having a period, as ovarian hormones are necessary for brain, heart, and bone health! (see: http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/5449… for more information). She also might not feel well unless she has the right hormones.
She can get support here: http://www.pofsupport.org/
And the NIH runs a study on women with POF. If she goes there, she can get top care, free, and get all the testing necessary to help figure out what caused this (see: http://pof.nichd.nih.gov/)
Good luck!
Question: Did anyone else had primary amenorrhea due to a prolactinoma? I did not start getting my period as a teenager when I should have, and after some tests the doctor said i have excess prolactin due to a pituitary tumor. I'm curious how common this is. I've been reading the questions here and I see alot of people have high prolactin levels, but I'm curious how many people didn't start getting their period to begin with because of it.
Answer: No.
Question: Did anyone got pregnant having primary amenorrhea? Hello,
I was just wondering whether there is someone with the same condition as me ( primary amenorrhea- never got a period naturally- my pituitary gland doesn't work).I know this is very rare but maybe there someone whose condition was corrected in fertility clinic and resulted in pregnancy?
Thank you so much!
Answer: Did you consult with an endocrinologist regarding surgery on your pitutary gland? I know that if there is no functioning with the pitutary gland,it makes it extremely impossible to conceive, since the pituitary gland controls your hormones. I was experiencing fertitility problems, as well and had to get an MRI to see if I had a tumor on my pituitary gland(surgery can correct if it is a tumor)-I didn't, but it was discovered that I had problems with my adrenal glands, which also controls hormonal balances (it works hand in hand with the pituitary gland). I had to be placed on steriods, and the doctors had high doubt that I would conceive-I am now 16 weeks pregnant, so just believe that even if all odds are against you, miracles do happen! :)
Question: does having a severe scoliosis affect you to have primary amenorrhea? are there connections? please let me know if scoliosis is related to having your period.

best wishes..

Question: Can I concieve with primary amenorrhea? I have primary amenorrhea. I also have a very small uterus and only one ovary was found during an ultrasound. Is there the slightest possibility that this can be corrected? and can i get pregnant?
Any information would be greatly appreciated
Answer: Primary amenorrhea is defined as:
Absence of menses by age 14 years with the absence of growth or development of secondary sexual characteristics (eg, breast development) or as absence of menses by age 16 years with normal development of secondary sexual characteristics
Your doctor needs to run some tests to find out what is going on before you know how to treat it:

Question: Question for girls/women with primary amenorrhea? I have primary amenorrhea which was brought on by a medical condition called Panhypopituitarism. My pituitary gland doesn't function on it's own. I never grew on my own, so I had to take Human Growth Hormones (HGH). I also never got my period on my own, so I was prescribed birth control pills. I don't get a period without taking the birth control pills. Will I need to look into fertility drugs when I wish to conceive or could I become pregnant while on the pill, even with my primary amenorrhea as a factor?
Answer: More than likely you'll have to take hormones. But there are a lot of great doctors and specialists out there. When you're ready I'm sure things will come together! But don't stress over it. Science advances more and more everyday! I do wish you the best!
