Question: Decreased libido...? For the past couple years I have noticed my libido decreasing severely. (My other half is home from Japan (Marines) for 2 weeks, haven't seen him in 3 months, and don't even want to have sex!) We have a 4 year old son together and everything was fine back then, obviously, lol. I have been getting bloodwork done, esp. testing my prolactin, testosterone, and androgen levels ordered by my gyno, due to a hormone deficiency problem of some sort, not sure exactly what yet. Intercourse can also be very painful for me, a symptom of endometriosis which may be one of my problems. I found a website that said decreased libido is a symptom of something, but cannot find the site again. Does anyone know what disease/syndrome can decrease your libido? I'm sure there are alot of them, and I have it on the tip of my tongue, but cannot remember it. Anyone who can help, please feel free. (I am only 20 years old!)
I had our son when I was 15, and this has been happening since before I was on birth control. I know depression effects your libido, and birth control as well. This has been a problem while I was on and off of pills.
Answer: It can be a sign of depression as well as several other ailments. It's good you're getting your bloodwork done to be safe.
Question: MTF transgenders (or anyone interested)... any thoughts on hormones and mental health? So, I have a few medical problems presumably linked to a dopamine deficiency (a.d.d., fatigue, and general muscle tension). I take dexedrine for it and while it's not a complete cure, it curtails most of the problems. However, from what I understand, prolactin and other chemicals can lower dopamine levels. I see separate doctors for my gender issues and a.d.d. issues; the gender doctor had me try Provera and I think it's making me feel warm and calm initially, but hung over in the morning. The morning-after feeling feels just like taking benadryl or anything else sedating, all of which make me feel terrible and I avoid taking as much as possible, and I thought there might be a connection.
So, has anyone taking hormones felt like it might be throwing them off mentally in a way not necessarily related to gender? I don't want to put this off any longer, but I don't want to be counterproductive either...
Answer: I would suggest NOT taking Provera. It has an an artificial progestin in it. If you want progesterone for breast development stick with a bioidentical micronized progesterone (not progestin) like Prometrium or it's generic equivalent Microgest. Provera has a high incident of side effects like anxiety and even suicidal ideation. Stop the Provera and switch to Prometrium. Prometrium has a much lower incidence of side effects.
I took Prometrium (and Microgest) for 3 years without problems.
