Question: What are some ways to decrease obesity in children? If you notice, more and more children are becoming obese. In fact, children are expected to live five years less than their parents because of obesity. In fact, a stunning 17% of kids aged 2-19 years old in the USA are obese. What are some ways to implement change in nations where there are fast food chains on every block? Should a really abuse child be concidered as 'neglected'? I meant should obesity in children be concidered neglect.

Answer: I don't think obesity in a child should be considered neglect on the part of the parents. I'm not trying to say obesity is a wonderful thing or parents don't have a responsibility to their children. Maybe these parents make bad choices for their kids in letting them become obese---parents make bad choices all the time---but a mistake isn't necessarily a crime. I'd be inerested to see how many of the 17% (a stat I'm hesitant to accept unconditionally) have parents who are obese as well. As far as what people can do when "there are fast food chains on every block" (not to mention processed food for sale in supermarkets) is to be more aware of the food that they buy. Do things like check the nutritional content on the back of the items---how many calories of fat, how much is trans. fat, how much sodium etc. Also, stop buying stuff like soda, junk food---or, like my parents did, just buy one dessert or other snack while everything else is healthy. Finally--and this can be a bit difficult when people are always working---COOK YOUR OWN FOOD. At least then you'll know what goes into what you and your kids are eating

Answer: are you looking for explanations that might come from structural functionalists? If you are, i like to think of it as a bit of a guessing game, as you can sort of spin a lot of the potential explanations assuming you dont have to do any large scale research to back it up. If i was to hazard an explanation from that perspective i would say increases in the definition and application of medical labels such as childhood obesity help to supplement and augment a growing biomedical field which will be one of the essential sectors of the economy going forward. It therefore makes sense to use childhood obesity specifically, because the sooner that an individual can be integrated into the system, the more controlled the relationship between the individual and the medical system will be.

Answer: Great question! Always look for local charities and grassroots organizations that have fewer ties with corporate business. For example, American Heart Association gets lots of money from big business and rich doctors who make millions from expensive heart surguries that people may not even need...

Answer: No, obesity is not a healthy idea. It is attractive to many people and by no means makes a person bad or stupid, but it is unhealthy. Being an obese person myself, I have thought a lot about this. Flavor is addictive. Foods that taste good are very addictive, Just think of kids and candy, If allowed, they will eat it all day everyday. When we get older our tastes change, we want a more mature flavor, but that addiction is still there, just in a different form. Americas economic success inevitably brought about the ready availability of rich, tasty foods. And they are available to us at any time of any day. This makes it feel like a sacrifice to go on a diet and/or eat healthy. But what do we do? We can't just shut down all these major food companies and farmers and historic food developments by stopping them from being produced, thats just not realistic. I'm sure our forefathers imagined the feasts and evolution of the American quisine, but they could not even imagine how rampant the obesity and poor health would overwhelm us. And even if they did, they surely would not have known what to do whilst still upholding human freedom. Its an inevitability of any truly successful civilization. Education is the only way to fix this. We can't just make people be healthy, we have to convince them to want to be healthy more than they want to eat good food. I'm still waiting to be convinced myself. Education is the only redemption for our country, and I don't mean standard school education, I mean basic everyday common sense education, this is where we are lacking.

Answer: Because of everything has sugar added to it, or is made of white flour (all the nutrients are bleached out of it) Plus America's gluttony is the number one cause of that problem
