Question: Anyone have any real solution for low HDL Cholesterol? My raw cholesterol numbers are not that bad. 190 total and 115 LDL, and I have some buildup in my coronary arteries. I took a statin for a year.......NOTHING, no difference. Quit the statin on my own and started taking flush free niacin, lowered total C to 165, LDL to 85. HDL still in the toilet. I do some aerobic and some weight training exercises, no difference. As I understand, raisin HDL is extremely difficult. Pfizer just gave up on Torcetrapib after sinking hundreds of millions into the project. Any good suggestions besides the typical snake oil remedies. I'm asking for 1st person experience, please.
My HDL stays from 24 to 28, and I'm 59 years old.
In reference to some of your answers, I do take a lot of vitamins, minerals, and particularly vitamin C, calcium, and others reported to be beneficial for CVD. I also like and eat veggies that are beneficial, like cabbage, broccoli, brussel sprouts, tomatoes and sauce. My diet probably not the problem because its better than most people's. In fact, my daughter just obtained her nutritionist/dietician degree from college, and is a trainer at 24 Hour Fitness, so I'm aware of much of what has been said. My problem is not high cholesterol, but an imbalance between HDL/Total C ratio.Cardiologist says right out that doctors don't know whether low HDL contributes to CVD, or is a marker (result) of other metabolic processes. If I have to self diagnose, I would say I have Metabolic Syndrome, which again is difficult to diagnose or treat.
Answer: Well Im studying as a health speciatlist and dietian, are you currently eating a regiment that is working to lower your low HDL? It is one thing in a cluster of many that you can do to increase and better your health.
Question: HDL cholesterol is slightly low and Albumin Level is slightly high. What do i have to eat to increase my HDL? I had my blood tested today and the result were....HDL cholesterol slightly low and Albumin level is slightly high. What do I have to eat in order to increase my HDL cholesterol to normal level and decrease my Albumin level?
My results Out of Range Normal Range
HDL Cholesterol 48 L 50 - 72 mg/dl
Albumin 5.3 H 3.2 - 5.0 gm/dl
SO tell me whats the natural way to solve this problem?
Doctors answer preferred... Thanks so much.
Answer: Essential Fatty Acids (EFA)
Take a look into Fish Oil and Flax Seed Oil.
I personally will opt for fish oil.
Doctors answers? I am not sure, but you do know doctors will usually get kick backs by medical companies. Meaning they get various stuff by medical companies that make certain drugs if a doctor writes it out often enough. (read up about it)
If you do not believe the fish oil helping H.D.L., google how people that use oral steroids to combat that issue.
Question: I have low cholesterol overall, but low HDL causes problems with the cholesterol ratio. How do I increase HDL? Also: am I really at risk, since LDL is also low?
Answer: Actually you want to eat red meat and saturated fat. Sorry it is true. Mono unsaturated fat like Omega 3 also helps. Eating good quality cholesterol, like eggs, helps. Eating too much Omega 6 and rancid vegetable oils will lower your HDL. The whole idea of limiting saturated fat started before there was a "good" and "bad" cholesterol. Did you lower your LDL artificially? I bet you did. Here is what your doctor said. "The drug is working great. We just need to raise your HDL" Classic response uttered thousands of times a day. What ratio are you using? The important one is HDL to total or triglycerides to total. Know how to lower triglycerides? Eat low carb and they will drop within days.\

Question: what are the side effects of having very low hdl cholesterol?
Answer: stroke, heart disease, and depression-because cholesterol is needed to produce hormones such as serotonin that can affect your mood. Please see a doctor!!! it is important to determine whether or not it is because your LDL cholesterol is high (the bad kind), it is from the use of certain medications or other drugs, or it is naturally occurring. But think of it as a balance-you need some HDL (good cholesterol)
Question: My dad has low HdL Cholesterol levels. Whats the best way to go about bringing it up?
Answer: Best and fastest way? Exercise, followed by an intake of omega3 acid fats, like the one found in flaxseed oil and cold water fish. No other proven way. Niacin has not proven to help.
Question: Is having low levels of HDL cholesterol bad? i know HDL is the "good" cholesterol, but having low levels of it bad? and why?
thank you! :)
Answer: Hi Lady Burps Alot,
HDL removes cholesterol from your bloodstream and carries it back to the liver. I like to think of HDL as a vacuum cleaner, picking up cholesterol LDL leaves behind in your arteries.

Question: My HDL cholesterol is low (32 mg/dl). How do I raise it to more than 40 mg/dl? My cholesterol test results are:
Jun-06 Jun-07 Jun-08
Triglycerrides 149 145 88
Cholesterol 302 323 184
HDL-cholesterol 33 41 32
LDL-cholesterol mg/dl 247 253 134
I started medication since April 2006 with conservative diet (limited saturated fat) and continues exercises (like fitness and strength workout). If I stop taking medication, total cholesterol and LDL will go high like in Jun 2007 above. Now I’m taking medicine lopid (Gemfibrozil) 300 mg/day and omega 3 but my HDL still low.
Answer: Gemfibrozil will raise your HDL. stay with the diet and exercise, it is nice to see you are doing your part. You also need to realize that it is not necessarily low, it is more about the ratio to LDL. Make sure to eat plenty of fiber too.
Question: What are reasons of my low cholesterol in my blood results? Could it be too low? Hello, I am not a particularly atheletic or fit person. I am about 167 cm of height and weight around 67 kgs. I eat pretty much unhealthy, lots of junk food and meat, i dont do particular much exercise. I am 27 years old and Asian. And also when i do exercises like basketball, i get tired and run out of air pretty fast. I did a blood test expecting high cholesterol in my blood. But my results show totally the opposite. Any ideas on why?
Here are my results
My heart rate at rest is around 47 beats per minute
My overall cholesterol is 117 mg/dl
HDL cholesterol is 36 mg/dl
LDL cholesterol is 72 mg/dl
VLDL cholesterol is 9 mg/dl
Triglycerids is 47 mg/dl
I have been told the overall cholesterol and LDL and triglycerids are very low "marathon runner" like low.
Any answers or opinions on those numbers ?
Thanks a lot :)
Answer: Your heart rate is unbelievably low. Congrats on that!! I hear the "ratio" of all your cholesterol parts is very important. Maybe you can find out about that. But everything looks extremely good. You must have good genes. Do you know if Asian people overall tend to have low cholesterol? Hmmm..I wonder.
Question: Normal Cholesterol But High Triglycerdie & Low HDL...what's wrong? -cholesterol is 161 mg/dl
-triglyceride is 201 mg/dl
-HDL is 29 mg/dl
LDL is 92 mg/dl
i know that a lot of people with high triglycerides and low HDL also have high cholesterol, but MY cholesterol is normal. is have normal cholesterol but high triglycerides and low HDL a symptom of something? Any info.. is great...
Answer: Your ratio of triglycerides to HDL is often cited as the most relevant number. Since both of your levels are less than ideal, you will have a poor ratio. Did you know that triglycerides are caused by carbohydrates and not fats? Did you know that saturated fat will raise your HDL more than your LDL? Did you know that 126 is considered the ideal LDL and anything higher or LOWER will increase your chances of developing cancer? You should be eating more meat and saturated fat. Taking cod liver oil or fish oil will help raise your numbers. Avoiding trans fats will also help. I bet you have been on a low fat diet. Hows your sex life?
