Question: Is hypothyroidism or hypoparathyroidism associated with a poor immune system? Is hypothyroidism or hypoparathyroidism associated with a poor immune system?
And especially when caused by Hashimoto's disease? I've heard is an autoimmune disease, which I imagine would affect one's immune system.
Answer: I don't think it's related to a poor immune system. I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism myself, and all my bloodwork was normal except for having a TSH level of 132. Other than my thyroid issue, I'm healthy as can be. I just hope the synthroid pills kick in soon :)
Question: Does anyone out there have Hypoparathyroidism and have to take lots of calcium to keep from going into tetany?
Answer: Huh? No. See your endocrinologist. Have your levels checked every couple of months.
Question: Can you have hypoparathyroidism and hypothyroidism at the same time?
Answer: Of course. The physical proximity of the two organs involved (the four parathyroid nodules actually sit on the thyroid) mean a variety of diseases and disorders can affect both at the same time. The differential diagnosis is a long one, including destructive infectious lesions, cancers, autoimmune disorders, etc.
Question: in hypoparathyroidism calcium level decreases ,so why do muscle spasm and contractions occur? low calcium level shoud decrease muscle contractions.
Answer: There are a variety of symptoms that are related to Hypoparathyroidism. Actually, low Calcium ( Ca ++) can cause muscle cramps. PTH ( Parathyroid hormone) works in conjunction with Vit D to regulate total body Ca++ . Hypoparathyrodism can result from congenital disorders ( born with), iatrogenic causes ( drugs, removal of the gland, radiation). Hypocalcemia ( low Ca++) is the most important consequence of hypoparathyroidism. Symptoms occur when ionized Ca++ level drops to < 2.5-3.0mg/100 ml. The symptoms are mainly neurologic, secondary to the hyperexcitability of neuronal membranes that develops in a LOW Ca++ environment. Neurologic ( Central Nervous System or Nervous System) effects:
1) Extremity and periorbital numbness
2) Muscle cramping and spasms
3) Altered mental status
4) Psychosis
5) Pain
6) Difficulty walking

Question: What causes hypoparathyroidism?
Answer: Hi Lynn
Here is your answer and solutions to the issue.
Definition: Hypothyroidism is caused by under active production of thyroid hormone by the thyroid gland.
Symptoms: It is a very common but often overlooked condition with symptoms that include fatigue, weight gain, slowed heart rate, constipation, irritability, sensitivities to cold, mental depression, slowness or slurring of speech, drooping and swollen eyes, swollen face, recurrent infections, increased allergic reactions, headaches, hair loss, brittleness of hair, female problems (such as heavy menstrual flow, painful periods, and premenstrual tension), decreased immune functioning, and calcium metabolism problems. In children, hypothyroidism can also retard normal growth and development. If undiagnosed and untreated, hypothyroidism can cause or contribute to many other recurring or otherwise non-responsive health problems.
Cause: Hypothyroidism can be caused by food allergies, excess stress, environmental toxins, insufficient exercise, B vitamin deficiencies, lack of iron, lack of digestive enzymes, liver disease, hormone imbalances, and/or parasites. All of these factors need to be screened for and addressed before lasting relief can be achieved.
Sulfa drugs, lithium, synthetic estrogen, and antihistamines can exacerbate hypothyroidism symptoms. In addition, if you are on thyroid medication, increase calcium supplementation to reduce the risk of bone loss.
Low thyroid function may also be due to Hashimoto`s disease, a condition in which the body becomes allergic to its own thyroid gland and forms antibodies that attack it, thus lowering thyroid hormone output.
Caution: If you suspect you are suffering from Hashimoto`s disease, consult a physician immediately.

Natural Cures
Broda Barnes Home Thyroid Test: The following simple test was developed by Broda Barnes, one of the first physicians to recognize the widespread incidence of hypothyroidism. Place a thermometer by the side of your bed before you go to sleep. In the morning before getting out of bed, lie still and place the thermometer under your armpit for 15 minutes, then check your temperature. A temperature below 97.5° F may indicate a problem with the thyroid gland. Take the temperature in this manner for three days, except for the first few days of the menstrual cycle and the middle day of the cycle, and calculate the average temperature. If it is consistently low, it is an indicator that your have hypothyroidism. The lower your body temperature is, the greater your degree of hypothyroidism.
Diet: Eat an organic, whole foods diet, emphasizing foods that are naturally high in iodine such as fish, kelp, vegetables, and root vegetables (such as potatoes). Also, increase your daily consumption of foods rich in vitamin B complex, such as whole grains and raw nuts and seeds, and foods rich in vitamin A, such as dark green and yellow vegetables. But avoid foods that slow down production of thyroid hormone, such as cabbage, Brussels sprouts, mustard greens, broccoli, turnips, kale, spinach, peaches, and pears.
Herbs: Mild cases of hypothyroidism can be helped by herbal bitters such as gentian or mugwort, while constipation due to low thyroid function can be improved by yellowdock, butternut, or cascara sagrada. St. John`s wort can also be helpful.
Homeopathy: Calc carb. in a dose of 1M once a day is very useful for treating hypothyroidism and improving overall thyroid function.
Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the application of water, ice, steam and hot and cold temperatures to maintain and restore health. Treatments include full body immersion, steam baths, saunas, sitz baths, colonic irrigation and the application of hot and/or cold compresses. Hydrotherapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions and can easily be used in the home as part of a self-care program. Many Naturopathic Physicians, Physical Therapists and Day Spas use Hydrotherapy as part of treatment. We suggest several at-home hydrotherapy treatments. Please seek the advice of your alternative health care practitioner before undergoing these procedures to make sure they are appropriate for you.
*Purified water is essential for any hydrotherapy treatment. Remedies for Treating Chlorinated Bath Water offers clear instructions and recommendations.
Lifestyle: Regular aerobic exercise can play an important role in helping to regulate thyroid hormone production.
Nutritional Supplementation: Organic thyroid glandular extracts can help restore normal thyroid function, but should only be used under the supervision of your physician. Other useful nutrients include vitamin A, vitamin B complex, essential fatty acids, iodine, kelp, calcium, magnesium, and zinc.
Alternative Professional Care: If your symptoms persist despite the above measures, seek the help of a qualified health professional. The following professional care therapies have all been shown to be useful for treating hypothyroidism include: Acupuncture, Biofeedback Training, Cell Therapy, Detoxification Therapy, Environmental Medicine, Homeopathy, Magnetic Field Therapy, Naturopathic Medicine, Osteopathy, Qigong, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Yoga. (See Glossary for descriptions of these Alternative Therapies.)
Best of health to you.
Cheers
Question: my 4 yr old yorkatese is very sick she has hypoparathyroidism they regulated her calcium but now she is not m she started with diarreha and vomiting and started convulsing. She had a very low calcium level, diagnosed with hypoparathyroidism and now can't matabolize protine and is gravely ill, they want us to put her to sleep. We are desperate she is only 4 years old. This all started when we put her on delta alba plex. Can you please help us
Answer: Try to get her some parathyroid hormone.
Question: Symptoms of Hypoparathyroidism? What are all the symptoms and signs of Hypoparathyroidism? Thanks.
Answer: * Tingling lips, fingers, and toes
* Muscle cramps
* Pain in the face, legs, and feet
* Abdominal pain
* Dry hair
* Brittle nails
* Dry, scaly skin
* Cataracts
* Weakened tooth enamel (in children)
* Muscle spasms called tetany (can lead to spasms of the larynx, causing breathing difficulties)
* Convulsions (seizures)
Additional symptoms that may be associated with this disease include:
* Painful menstruation
* Hand or foot spasms
* Decreased consciousness
* Delayed or absent tooth formation
In contrast to hyperparathyroidism (hyperfunction of the parathyroids), hypoparathyroidism does not have consequences for bone.
Question: Could hypoparathyroidism create same symtoms? Could hypoparathyroidism create similar symptoms as hyper or hypo thyroidism???
Answer: NO the parathroids only effect CA. Symptoms would be related to low CA and thinning of bone.
Question: My doberman has generalised demodictosis(mange but all over) anyone have any herbal remedies? My baby girl is badly inbred and has a weak immune system due to hypoparathyroidism (im not quite sure what it is either) and the mange is very severe. She actually only has about a third of her hair and looks awful. No one but me wants to touch her. I have tried numerous vetrinary products but nothing works. I was wondering if anyone knows of home or herbal remedies?
I have tried ivermectine and it gave her fits because of the hypoparathyroidism, and i have tried a spot treatment called advocate by bayer which is for mange, worms, fleas, and ticks. It started to work but she fell into the 2% it doesnt work for. She also has open sores caused by infected blood coming to the surface because of the mange therefore we cant use mitaban until they heal but they wont heal till the mange goes.
chihuahua magic, i will try that remedy and i will be sure to let you know. I am just about desparate enough to try any thing. i love my baby girl, i got her when i was pregnant with my first child and maternal instincts kicked in. I have 2 boys so she is my special girl. The only problem is the breeders were greedy for liver and tan pups in an area where dobes are few and far between, so her parents were too closely related, so the mange isnt the only problem, but its the only one we cant manage, and its the worst.
Answer: Yes! THIS ABSOLUTELY WORKS!!! But you'll spend about $20.00.
Combine powdered cloves, powdered wormwood and powdered black walnut hulls, and use to dust and rub in to her skin. Rub her down every other day for 10 days. It kills all parasites.
Available at 'herbalcom.com'. I have used them for years now and they have great herbs at the best prices.
Question: Gastric Bypass & Hypoparathyroidism? I am scheduled for a gastric bypass on the 22nd of this month. One caveat: I have surgically induced hypoparathyroidism as a result of thyroid CA treatment 6 years ago. My bariatric physician feels this should not be of concern because my calcium levels are well controlled with 1000 mg CA+ daily along with 0.25 mcg of calcitriol daily and 50,000 IU of Vit D 3x week.
I'd appreciate hearing from other medical professionals about this situation, along with others who may have undergone a bypass with co-existing HPTH.
(The procedure scheduled is a Roux en Y type)
Answer: First of All Hypothyroidism and hypoparathyroidism are not the same thing not even remotely related. My hypoparathyroidism was also surgically induced when my throid was taken out. As Long as you show no signs of Tetany and your calcium levels are normal, I would think you will be fine. But be warned if your calcium levels drop you know what can happen so I would talk this over with several physicians before you do this.
