Question: How do you treat cushing syndrome caused prolong prednisolone taking? My sister was wrongly diognised with idiophathic pulmonary fibrosis and was put on high dose of prednisolone. She developed cushing syndrome and other side effects. She was later told by onother hospital she has no ipf and should stop prednisolone. She is now very sick with cushing syndrome. Which drug can reduce the steroid in her body?
Answer: The most crucial thing is that the prednisolone should never be stopped suddenly - this can make someone seriously ill. It needs to be reduced gradually, under medical supervision...
Question: Low Cortisol levels with Cushing Syndrome symptoms? I am 36 yrs old and started having all the symptoms of Cushing Syndrome that is getting worse. I got 3 sets of Kenolog injections for a Keloid, last one in begining of May. My Cortisol levels were check and it come out <1 (low) with Cushing the levels should be high. Has anyone seen this type of condition before?
Answer: You CAN have low cortisol with Cushings. There is Cyclical cushings (some doctors don't believe in this, despite the fact it is PROVEN to exist and has been diagnosed). In Cyclical Cushings (which can affect both men and women), you can have low cortisol levels.
You need to test more than once, particlary with Cyclical Cushings.
The problem is, it is seen as a rare disease - BUT it is NOT rare, just rarely diagnosed, with many patients waiting ten years or more for a diagnosis.
Have you had a 24hour UFC? This involves you emptying your bladder in the morning first thing, then adding any other urine you pass into a container, which usually has boric acid in ( if it doesn't have any preservative, it will need refridgerating or freezing. Make sure it's not got hydrochloric acid as this can neutralize the cortisol). Of course, you can still get lows or normal cortisol with this, and any other test, hence the need for more than one of each test. There is also a 24 hour blood testing thing (only had the normal one myself though).
Don't be put off by the doctors saying "It's probably not Cushings", in many cases it IS! You can also be thin and still have it. Plus, ANY size tumour can be Cushings.
You need to see an endocrinologist, preferably one who specializes in Cushings (many endocrinologists don't know much about Cushings).
Also, this forum has some good information about Cushing's, and you can post and ask any questions about anything.
I did and got some good advice.

One more thing, if one endocrinologist says you don't have it (or even two or more), find another one until you are satisfied. Many people with this have been told they don't have it, only to find that they do.
Question: how do the treatments of cushing syndrome Help? HOw is the day to day life affected? Is there a cure for it?
Answer: Cushing's syndrome is a constellation of clinical abnormalities caused by chronic high blood levels of cortisol or related corticosteroids. Cushing's disease is Cushing's syndrome that results from excess pituitary production of ACTH, usually secondary to a pituitary adenoma. Typical symptoms include moon facies and truncal obesity with thin arms and legs. Diagnosis is by history of receiving corticosteroids or by elevated serum cortisol. Treatment depends on the cause.

Question: what statement is correct regarding the use of hydrocortisone for a client with cushing syndrome? -taking that drug can replace the hormones usually secreted by the adrenal medulla
-take this pill every morning before breakfast
-this pill can cause weight gain, so we must exercise more and eat less
-i should call the doctor if i think u am starting a cold and i should not take aspirin
tnx... if it is okay, kindy put the rationale behind..and also the source tnx!
Answer: 4 is correct
1: The adrenal medulla secretes your catecholamines like Norepi and Epi: The adrenal cortex secretes Cotrisol (Remember: CORTEX:CORTISOL)
2: Take the pill with food
3: Total judgement answer, would never be right. You can gain weight, but Cushing Syndrome causes that too: Moon face and buffalo hump
4: Hydrocortisone is a steriod that suppresses your immunity and so even a cold in an immunosuppressed person can be really severe.
Question: What can you tell me about the Management of acute Polymyalgia with Prednisone induced Cushing's Syndrome ? I've had very bad Polymyalgia for a couple of years. I was only diagnosed a year ago. I was placed on Prednisone and the dose was gradually increased to 10mg a day. The pain and stiffness were still quite bad. They introduced Methotrexate 20mg once a week with the necessary follow-up calcium folinate the following day. The pain is still present but bearable. The Cushing's Syndrome is terrible, my face and neck are so swollen and red, I look like Santa Claus, and my ENT specialist says my trachea is collapsing from the pressure. I've been very careful not to put on too much weight with it, but the swelling is another matter. I'm so self-conscious that I've cut off personal contact with my friends, stopped going out unless I have to, I just stay alone because I'm so ashamed of how strange I look. I'm just feeling like this will never end.I know that the Cushing's is the trade-off for the pain. I'm feeling pretty desperate.
Thank you Empress Jan, You are right, and you're wrong.
The cause of mine is definitely huge doses of prednisone.. no tumour!
Answer: Cushing's is caused by a pituitary tumor (adenoma) and you need to see an endocrinologist. The tumor is causing the pit to give false hormones to the rest of the body, including weight gain (I know, went through this!). I had my tumor removed and the hump went away, but still had the weight gain. I eventually went on Topiramate for the weight (under dr. care), but I also had high choloestrol too (which caused fatty liver). So far that is working, but it's a slow weight loss, but it's working. My joints are not hurting any more; my migraines are minimal...you need to see doctor again. I believe the Prednisone is doing you more harm than good and do not take hormones!
Question: Will unbalanced spleen engery, or any of the other engeries, cause Cushing's syndrome? Will unbalanced spleen engery, or any of the other engeries, cause Cushing's syndrome?
Answer: No.
(There is no such thing as "unbalanced engery". This is an imaginary concept from pre-scientific China.)
Question: Is this part of Cushing Syndrome? I was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure. When I do my 24-hour urine collection I pee out alot of protein. I just discovered recently I might have Cushing Syndrome. I believe I have Cushing Syndrome. I was reading that a hormone is a protein. Is this possible?
Answer: When high blood pressure occurs it hurts your kidneys..due to the damage your kidneys allow larger than normal particles through. This is why you see proteins. Cushing's effects almost everything. You have high blood sugar too? You also have a decreased immunity, truncal obesity, thin extremities, usually a round face, and a fat pad on your neck called a buffalo hump.
Question: Can you please explain Cushing Syndrome? in a way I can understand? People use medical terms which I have no clue what they are talking about.
Answer: Cushing syndrome is a disease that occurs when your body produces too much of the hormone cortisol (an adrenal cortical hormone). It may also occur if you take too much cortisol or other steroid hormones.
Cushing’s disease is a condition in which the pituitary gland releases too much adrenocorticotropic hormone (ATCH). The pituitary gland is an organ of the endocrine system. Cushing's disease is a form of Cushing syndrome.
Cushing syndrome due to adrenal tumor is an endocrine system disorder that occurs when there is a tumor of the adrenal gland releasing excess amounts of the hormone cortisol.
Exogenous (originating outside or caused by factors outside the organism) Cushing syndrome is a form of Cushing syndrome that occurs in people taking glucocorticoid (also called corticosteroid) hormones, such as prednisone.(for treatment of another disease)
Ectopic (situated elsewhere than in the normal place) Cushing syndrome is a condition in which a tumor outside the pituitary or adrenal glands produces a hormone called adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH).
Question: what kind of foods should someone who thinks they might have Cushing's syndrome avoid?
thanks yoli!
evil tomatoes? well luckily, I never eat tomatoes anyway..they make me gag
and I eat loads of veggies!
Answer: I would avoid tomatoes if I were you......................
